Catching Zzzs

Some nights you get a great sleep and wake up completely refreshed, other nights you toss and turn and wake up feeling more tired than when you went to bed. We all know which scenario is more desirable, but it’s not always clear how to make it happen. With a little help from technology, we discovered there’s a lot we can learn about the science of sleep.

Zeo is system for tracking and improving the quality of your sleep. Ben Rubin, My Zeo It was created by three sleep-deprived students from Brown University: Eric Shashoua, Ben Rubin (left) and Jason Donahue. Their bedside sleep management gear monitors how you sleep through the night, including how much time you spend in REM and deep sleep. The system includes a headband outfitted with a wireless sensor, which tracks your sleep stages and sends the data to a smartphone or to the Zeo Bedside device. The headband also includes an alarm that’s designed to gently rouse you at the least disruptive point in your sleep cycle, so you wake up feeling good, not frazzled.
