Before kids can take off with their friends and ride bikes to the playground, they’ve got to master the two-wheeler. It’s a big milestone, and today’s Grommet makes the path to two-wheeling even smoother and more fun.

The YBIKE collection is designed to enhance kids’ balance and boost their gross motor-skills development. The inventor of these hip, sporty push-bikes is Jaco Kruger of Chrome Cherry Design Studios in South Africa (fun fact: Jaco etched his kids’ names in each mold as a tribute to them). From toddlers to preschoolers, there’s a YBIKE that’s just the right fit for kids on the go.

Balance bikes have become increasingly popular over the last few years as an alternative to bikes with training wheels. When kids use training wheels, they tend to focus on steering and pedaling and rely on the stabilizing wheels to keep the bike upright. With a balance bike, kids experience how a bike really feels when it’s moving and the rider’s weight is shifting. Kids learn how to balance from the start, rather than becoming too dependent on training wheels.

There are a few qualities that make YBIKEs stand out from the competition. They have a long fork offset, so the bikes have a wider turning radius and are less likely to tip. The seats are long, so kids can find the perfect spot with just enough legroom and inch backward as they get taller. Plus, covered rear wheels protect little toes from being run over. We love their rugged, sporty looks, too.
