Design Without Waste

Matthew Bietz, founder of Quartertwenty

When Matthew Bietz designs furniture and metalwork, he doesn’t just think about the final product. He carefully plots how his pieces will be constructed and devises ways to make use of the fabrication scraps. When he’s making his GiddyUp stool, for instance, Matthew starts with a single sheet of laser-cut steel for the base of the stool, then he uses the cutouts to create shelf brackets. A single sheet of steel yields 3 different products. When he cuts slots into the shelf brackets, he’s left with 5-inch strips of steel. Instead of going to the scrap heap, these steel strips get turned into sleek bottle openers that give you “leverage over your beverage,” as he puts it. From one piece of steel, Matthew creates three products and no leftovers.

Zero waste is a key tenant of Quartertwenty, the design and construction firm Matthew founded in Portland, Ore. His Knucklehead bottle openers are simple with a minimalist style, yet strong enough to latch onto a bottle cap and pry it off with one quick pull. The powder-coated steel is incredibly durable, too, so it’ll hold up for many rounds of fun.
