Together we're enabling Citizen Commerce™. Our "team" is anyone who believes that we can make a difference by celebrating the useful, innovative, and beautifully crafted Grommets we collectively discover.
Jules spent her childhood days reading every single biography her Detroit elementary school offered, filling her head with gigantic ideas about how each and every person can impact the world. This inspires Jules as she leads Daily Grommet in building a Citizen Commerce-powered marketplace to help people “take back the shelves” in retail. Jules’ confidence in attacking seemingly impossible challenges was formed at a young age. Her first trip to Europe was not a mere visit…she moved herself to Paris right out of college. Similarly, she relocated her family of five to Ireland for the first half of this decade. Why? Why not?
Daily Grommet is Jules’ third startup. Jules started her professional life as an industrial designer working for computer enterprises. She soon realized the majority of our economy is shaped by consumer products companies, so she followed the action over to consumer brands as an executive at Keds and Hasbro. Jules is told she is the first industrial designer to get a Harvard MBA.
Grommet that inspires Jules: Zkano Socks, “because the founder is passionate about preserving her family’s manufacturing business in Alabama while building a sustainable business.”

Someday a business book will be written on why trust is the most important asset one can build in a company. And when that book is written, Joanne will be a central case study subject. In her every action, Joanne is working to deserve the trust of the Grommet community. She is personally driven by the idea of creating a business with deep purpose — one that is stitching together transparency and community to serve up meaningful, adventurous stories around products. Joanne continually raises the bar of what it means to be a great Grommet and to have a company holistically reflect the values it represents. Which translates for our customers to: “I have your back.”
In a former life Joanne ran the $350 million product development organization at Keds, where she was relentless in her quality expectations and swift to take action if she sensed a customer disappointment looming. Given Joanne’s flawless inner compass and courage, it’s no surprise that her great grandmother was the first woman in Massachusetts to hold a motorcycle license. Joanne is breaking new ground, too, in reinventing how consumer products are marketed via storytelling and community. And she does it with caring and trust, running on all cylinders.
Grommet that delights Joanne: Fat Toad Farm. “When you see this video set on a farm in Vermont, you know the Reid-Irving family really loves those goats.”
Grommet that inspires Joanne: Lunette. “It’s products like Lunette in combination with their advocates like Julia and Liz who will affect positive change in the world.”

You know dual-processor computers? Jeanne is a dual-processor person. She can keep the high level stuff moving forward at a lightening speed while never dropping any of those pesky little balls. The thing that really gets her juices flowing is an opportunity to disrupt a market. At Grommet she is looking to nimbly jump around traditional retail bottlenecks (oh, those lonely products sitting on shelves and in crowded online catalogs) by connecting people right to the product creators and their stories.
Maybe she learned that “let’s put on a show” mentality when she was on the founding team of Monster.com, or one of her other two startups. Maybe it’s from her early days in theater -- she has even performed on stage with a live boa constrictor around her neck. Don’t mess with Texas? Heck. We say “Don’t mess with Jeanne.”
Grommet that inspires Jeanne: Vurtego Pogo stick. “I love the story of a boyhood passion turning into a family business. And it’s a new sport!"
Grommet that surprises Jeanne: Alite Chair

Top software developers--those rare but real technology rock stars--often have a creative alter ego. They are different from we mere mortals, as though it’s not “enough” to masterfully build the digital world. It’s not enough to simply shape our future. These engineers seem to take that vibrant energy in lots of interesting directions. True to this restless type, Sean showed his cards early, when he was voted “most musical” in high school. His childhood start was with classical training. Mozart. Bach. He knows them all and keeps up those relationships to this day. Sean branched out into bluegrass, serious jazz studies, and nighttime gigs singing and playing lead guitar in a few jam bands. Sean’s laser focus for his passions, from shaping technologies, coding, architecting, and music are challenged by our crazy work space with half our team paying him a daily call. He’s a guy in demand. He’s a guy who can handle the demand. He thrives on it.
Sean’s top Grommet is Tasty Clouds Jalapeno flavor cotton candy, “because it combines two of my favorite things: sweet and spicy.”
Sean’s Ziggs Profile (he built the Ziggs site too!)

Steve’s favorite Grommet is IdeaPaint (dry erase paint) because he does his best thinking with a marker in his hand.
At Sara’s Grommet job interview, the very first thing she said was “I grew up a poor black child.” Ok, we know she stole that line from Steve Martin. But it worked. We fell over laughing. That is pretty much how Sara approaches tense situations, a reality she must have encountered often growing up one of eleven children. Disarm with humor, work really hard -- and then close the deal. She has closed plenty of complicated multi-million dollar transactions as a former investment banker. There’s no business development playbook at Grommet, so Sara is writing it for us in her inimitable ego-less way.
Grommet that delights Sara: Spencer Peterman bowls. “Spencer, a master craftsman, takes no credit for these works of art. He says nature does all the work and he just polishes them up. I like everything about these bowls and their creator.”
Grommet that inspires Sara: Haiti Projects. “Sarah Hackett is the real deal. She’s authentic, smart, driven… saw a need and just did it. Period.”

“Fearless” is the first word that comes to our minds when we think of Jen. When she comes in the office on a Monday, we never know if she just scaled Mount Washington or mastered a new cuisine, and we look forward to seeing what off-the-wall Grommets she uncovered in her weekend travels. Speaking of courage, Jen had the chutzpah to make a living in sales for Bristol-Myers Squibb, then to leave that big paycheck to spend a few years raising her two sons, and then to start her own event planning business. It makes perfect sense that she was the first person to join Daily Grommet at its founding…even a startup can’t scare this woman.
Grommet that inspires Jen: Haiti Projects. “I respect Sarah Hackett’s story and passion for the women of Haiti.”
Grommet that speaks to Jen: Vapur flexible water bottle. “It demonstrates Citizen Commerce perfectly. A lawyer turned his passion for the outdoors into a company, and one of his customers discovered it for us.”

Wendy defies easy classification. She’s as unabashedly devoted to perfect manicures as she is to extreme cycling events, like RAGBRAI in Iowa. Just when you think you “get” Wendy, or a Grommet idea…think again. Wendy is an independent thinker who often makes the rest of us see a Grommet differently. She has travelled the world of Internet innovation, including creating the first consumer business unit at Vistaprint, managing GM and AT&T Wireless accounts at Digitas, and shepherding SmarterKids through to being one of the very few survivors of the dot-com craze. Wendy is as tough as her nails, clearly.
A Grommet that touched Wendy: Savannah Bee. “You just fall in love with the guy when he tells the story about how he learned about bees and the honey-making process.”
A Grommet that became a friendship: Iheartjenna. “Not only do I adore the bracelets, but our story gave Jenna so much hope and purpose while she makes these bracelets and takes care of her grandma at the same time.”

Kate is fast on her feet and happiest with a full e-mail inbox (ok, that’s just plain odd). But that’s because Kate is always on a mission to uncover good people and share their stories with the world. Kate’s a natural-born communicator and activist. In fact, her efforts to protect Halloween from being “banned” in the Los Altos, Calif., school district sparked a media maelstrom that only Kate could handle -- with a flash of outrage behind her eyes and a warm smile to disarm any detractors. This killer talent has landed Kate in outward-facing roles at companies like Hill & Knowlton, The Weber Group and Robert Half International. There’s no bushel known to man that could ever hide Kate’s colorful internal light.
A Grommet that inspires Kate: Fish Aye Trading Company. “The use of color and raw materials in John’s fish prints is delightful to me. I loved hearing John’s story about the bleeding fish on his deck that created a beautiful pattern and led him to discover his inner artist.”
A Grommet that informed Kate: The Vanilla Company. “Talking with Patricia Rain inspired me to really think about each ingredient I use for everything I do. Where does it come from? Who made it? What is its impact on the world? Her work is amazing.”

The basic truth about Julia is that we’re all going to work for her someday. Whether it’s playing a mean game of golf, connecting effortlessly with luminaries, or seamlessly blending her polar-opposite design and business backgrounds, Julia is charmingly making the most out of every moment in her life and winning fans and followers at every turn. She worked as a designer for Target, and after a successful summer internship at Grommet, she slowed down her MBA studies to grab a desk in our office. She’s enthusiastically vacuuming up a whole lot of opportunity within the ambiguity of a startup, which makes us all just stand back slack-jawed, shaking our heads and smiling.
Grommet that inspires Julia: Fair Trade Sports “It’s inspiring how sports bring people together from all over the world. The values and aspirations of the founder of Fair Trade Sports, Scott James, have been manifested into his products. “
Grommet that illustrates product journalism for Julia: SwiMP3 “So many aspects of the Grommet community came together to make this story. And this is a great example of how products that can’t tell their story on a shelf can come to life at Grommet.”

It came as no surprise to learn that Jesse grew up in a Northern California commune. He has that intellectually curious and indie point of view you’d associate with an alterna-childhood. It serves him well in crafting each and every one of the Grommet videos, covering a huge range of subjects from women's health to golf pros, and from Haitian social enterprise to personal money management. Here’s why: After all is said and done, and we have earnestly shot acres of video showing all the aspects of a story that we are passionately committed to including, Jesse has to step around the fray and see the true core of the Grommet story. And then confidently serve it up without leaving too many gems on the cutting room floor. Maybe his experience swimming naked above the Arctic Circle (yes, he has) built up his sangfroid. However he got it, he needs it, and we do too.
Grommet videos that most recently challenged Jesse: Fish Aye Trading Company and litl web book.

Every living organism has a nervous system. June is ours. Her work fluidly weaves the technical, operational, and business requirements of Grommet into a seamless flow. June thrives at grabbing hard and sometimes insurmountable-seeming problems and cracking them. She climbs the mountain, plants her flag, and then moves on to the next high peak. We were briefly worried about giving June enough excitement in a mere office environment, having learned she once saw a dead body in a summer job. Luckily, it’s not an experience June is looking to repeat. June gets her kicks out of defending against the body blows any young company gets, and we’re glad she’s on our side to shore us all up.
Grommet that most surprised June: Yantra Mats. “I was skeptical about its benefits but I found that I enjoy using it. It’s simulating and relaxing at the same time.”

If an e-mail can inspire love at first sight, then the long, articulate message Katherine sent us on the day we launched Grommet is what, at root, made us rabid to land Katherine on our team. That and the fact that she is one of our earliest Grommets suppliers. What we didn’t know at first is that she’s also a total quant jock. She can make the numbers behind Grommet sing as well as her thoughtful words. What charges her up about this company is that we inextricably tie our success to the success of the Grommet creators. She learned the importance of such integrity and values while managing the Polartec business at Malden Mills. Aligning ourselves with the Grommets is both fair and brave -- like Katherine.
Grommet that inspires Katherine: Haiti Projects “I’m always inspired by Sarah Hackett in Haiti Projects’ video when she says, ‘I can’t sew, but I can organize.’ I get chills.”

Poetically enough, having our social media den leader, Tori, living 3,000 miles from the Grommet offices is a nonissue. She’s been a pro at rallying people all her life, starting with her 13 years as a cheerleader, then moving onto her experience as an entrepreneur, and her legendary reputation as an entertaining maven. It was the act of once creating a product herself that drew Tori to Daily Grommet — as she saw a group of like-minded people who respect and celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit in the same way she does. That respect shines through in the genuine curiosity and warmth she exudes in the bazillion conversations she holds each and every day. Our fingers get tired just thinking of all that digital chatter, but Tori sails right on through.
Grommet that inspires Tori: Pumponator. “Seeing a Grommet invented by a 4th grader reminds me that creativity is in us all - it just needs to be nurtured.”
Twitter: @dailygrommet
You know it’s a great hire at Daily Grommet when, within the first month on the job, you hear people saying “I’ll check with Ray,” or “Let me talk to Ray and figure this out.” It’s especially impressive when that new team member is a fresh grad. Within just weeks at Grommet, Ray’s ears must have been burning, and that’s a good thing. Ray’s hobby is basketball and he’s already making career-layups for us on a daily basis.
Grommets that grab Ray: My favorite is the zerOz wallet. "It's just so sleek and fits all that I'm looking for in a wallet". A close second would probably be Fitbit. "It is just really neat and it'd be amazing to track my daily stats.”
Let’s say you call Daily Grommet. Let’s say you discover that the person on the other end of the phone is surprisingly irreverent. She’s personable, she’s professional but not exactly…“corporate.” We’d say you are probably talking to Chew-hoong. Whatever the task in front of her—active tennis coach, customer service ninja, or impersonating a giant honey bee (as she did for a local fundraiser) she is fiercely determined to put her spin on it. Just try her. Whack a problem her way and you will see it enthusiastically served back to you, solved, no charge for the smile. No video of Chew-hoong yet…working on getting her in one.
Chew-Hoong's top Grommet is Blossom Trivet. “When the Grommet partner explained what "blossomed" the creation, it reminded me of how good things happen when we take time out of our busy lives to smell the roses. In her case, it was the poinsettia that "blossomed" this beautiful, multi-functional Grommet. What's extra special is when a Grommet can morph for lots of uses; this satisfies the practical side of me that wants it all.”

Ann is a writer and editor who dreams about building a modern house but settles for fixing up an old place, one DIY project at a time. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband and three kids. Her favorite Grommet is Fair Trade Sports.
Christopher is a stay-at-home dad to his three kids. After living in 12 cities, he returned to his roots and writes from Minneapolis. His dream Grommet is a Minnesota Vikings Super Bowl Champion coffee cup – but he's not holding his breath.
Rita Richardson proofs copy and writes for Daily Grommet from West Harwich on Cape Cod. She enjoys reading, writing, cooking, herb gardening and exploring the shore and Cape villages. She is a frequent contributor to The Essential Herbal, a quarterly, and has written a small book on lavender for the Cape Cod Lavender Farm. Favorite Grommet? Sweet Grass Farms room diffusers.
Angella is a mom of three, a chartered accountant (she's Canadian, eh?), and she posts prolifically to her site Dutch Blitz, her photo site, and Work It Mom!. She's busy, yes, but wouldn't have it any other way.
Cara, based outside of Washington, D.C., writes about business, technology and life as a suburban mom. She likes to read, knit (though wishes she were better at it) and laugh.
When she's not writing about cool finds here at Daily Grommet, Mir is likely over at her award-winning personal blog, Woulda Coulda Shoulda, or ferreting out bargains for her thrift-minded shopping site, Want Not. A Yankee transplant, Mir lives in the greater Atlanta area with her husband, two kids and spoiled rescue dog. She thinks you're very pretty, and she loves your shoes.
