Help for Heroes

U.S. military personnel who’ve been injured in service deserve the best possible treatment, and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund aims to see that they get it. If you’re looking for a worthy cause to donate to this holiday season, the nonprofit organization will put your contributions to great use.

Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, Intrepid Fallen Heros FundThe Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund was established in 2000 to carry on a mission started by the late Zachary Fisher to provide financial support for the families of military personnel who died in service. After federal legislation was passed in 2005 that substantially increased the benefits granted to families of fallen military personnel, the Fund focused its efforts on another underserved military community: wounded soldiers.

The Fund set out to build state-of-the art medical facilities for military personnel and veterans. Its first facility, the Center for the Intrepid, is a $55 million physical rehabilitation center built in 2007 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Next came the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) in Bethesda, Md., which is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injuries. The current focus of the Fund is to build a series of NICoE Satellite Centers that will be located at some of the largest military bases around the country, so troops suffering from traumatic brain injuries can receive care from their home bases.

More soldiers than ever are surviving combat, but they’re coming home injured and in need of care and support. We can't think of a better gift than to help enable their recovery.
