Happily Under the Weather

This umbrella’s a keeper. It’s strong, stable, aerodynamic and easy to control, even in high winds. It’s NOT a flimsy excuse for raincover that’s going to wind up in a landfill after the first big gust.

The inventor is Greig Brebner, a New Zealander who had many close calls with inverted umbrellas and protruding umbrella tips. At nearly 6’ 3”, Greig tends to be at eye level with bent, twisted umbrella frames, and he’d seen enough to know the traditional umbrella was long overdue for a structural makeover. He set to work at his kitchen table with a glue gun and some kite material, and the rest is history.

What’s different about the Blunt is its low profile and tensioned canopy, which allows the umbrella to withstand the wind without putting stress on the carrier. Greig came up with a “radial tensioning system” that uses double struts and telescopic ribs to distribute the effort used in opening the umbrella throughout the entire canopy surface. That creates a strong, aerodynamic umbrella with no sharp points at the edge of the canopy -- so the fabric won’t easily tear away from the covered tips and bystanders won’t get poked. Three styles are available: the classic Blunt, the lightweight Blunt Lite, and Blunt XL, which is large enough for two adults (perfect for the golf course). Blunt is undercover comfort at its best.
