As much as Americans love to complain about the state of our public schools, we tend to forget how lucky our children are to have the right to a free education. By comparison, after 30 years of constant civil war, most of Cambodia’s schools have been destroyed and as much as 70% of the population is illiterate. Fortunately George and Kari Grady Grossman, who adopted a son in Cambodia, are honoring his birthplace by helping to build that education system back.
The couple founded Sustainable Schools International, and as their first project, built a school in the village of Chrauk Tiek. And now it’s their mission to help make sure that school is staffed with paid teachers and has funding to ensure it’s managed properly.
There are many ways to support this good work. You can donate, or even buy the award-winning book that Kari wrote about her experience there, Bones That Float. You can support similar Cambodian school projects through American Assistance for Cambodia, or find other grassroots projects around the globe through Global Giving. Alternately, DonorsChoose.org lets you pick an American classroom in need, and pick up the tab on a few.
Do you have experience with Sustainable Schools International, or do you know of any other great education-focused organizations that could use more support this season?
