Story

"Pieces of Conversation"

Catherine Hughes, CJ's Toffee Talk, and Suzie Sopher Did you ever have a family secret that was just too good not to share? Catherine Hughes does. Her godmother Suzie Soper made the most meltingly good toffee. Catherine could never get enough of this delicious melange of caramelized sugar, butter, and seasonings that turned peanuts, red walnuts, almonds, and pecans into exquisite toffee bites.

Catherine took note and no, she won’t reveal the family recipe, but she shares her delicious knowledge through CJ’s Toffee Talk. She started this sweet venture with the help of family and friends, who have helped spread the word throughout the San Francisco area. Carolyn Porter We heard about it from Carolyn Porter (left), a friend Jules met in Dublin (and Toffee Talk’s web designer) who arranged for Jules and Catherine to meet this past summer. Buy Gourmet Toffee Candies here. Carolyn’s entire family is crazy about Toffee Talk, including her health-nut husband Tony, who’s not usually into sweets. They’re not the only people who find it irresistible: This summer, CJ’s Toffee Talk won two awards at the venerable Marin County Fair (a blue ribbon for the best toffee plus best-in-show for the entire confections division).

Catherine calls her toffee “pieces of conversation” because you cannot eat one without comment. We can attest to that at Daily Grommet, where we devoured Catherine’s artisanal toffee treats and then couldn’t stop talking about how delicious they were. From San Francisco to our East Coast offices and everywhere in between, we think Catherine’s toffee is about to make a big splash in candyland. Psst…the gossip on the street is all about Toffee Talk…pass it on.
