Many of you may recall that The Simpsons’ clever dog, Santa’s Little Helper, is a greyhound that Bart and Homer rescued from their local dog track. In real life, the organization Grey2K USA is making that happen on the national level.
The dog track is not a pleasant place for the beautiful, intelligent greyhound. There, the dogs often experience stress injuries like bone fractures and soft tissue tears. They live in warehouse-style kennels, confined for long hours each day in cages barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around. And every year, as many as 8,500 dogs are killed when they are no longer able to compete. The members of Grey2K USA advocate for stronger dog protection laws and hope to close down existing greyhound racetracks. They also offer adoption referral information to help the tens of thousands in need of homes.
This cause is particularly close to the heart of Daily Grommet founder, Jules Pieri, who has a few rescue greyhounds of her own. "As the mom of two rescue dogs myself, I can personally attest that there’s nothing more rewarding than giving a pet a safe, secure “forever home.”
If you’re interested in Grey2K USA, you can volunteer, donate, or adopt.
If you’re loyal to another breed or species, use Petfinder to search for pets in need of rescue near you.
Do you have experience with Grey2K USA, or do you know of any other great organizations that could use more support this season?
