Rethinking Wool

If you like to play outside, chances are you’ve thought a lot about how to stay warm while you hike, ski, climb or ride. Ibex TeamAnd like us, you’ve probably spent some time in polyester base layers that tend to smell funky, even straight out of the washer. We went looking for a more natural alternative and found it in Vermont, where they know a thing or two about staying comfortable in cold weather. Ibex, a hip clothing company located in White River Junction, uses something surprisingly retro to make their long underwear: wool.

Only this isn’t your mother’s wool. Ibex founder John Fernsell (pictured) set out to design “new” wool garments that perform better and are more sustainable than synthetic fabrics. Ibex Team What’s new is the super fine weaves using wool that comes from merino sheep in New Zealand. It’s as soft as cashmere and it’s absolutely not itchy. Plus it’s naturally anti-microbial. Believe it or not, you can wear an Ibex Woolie for several days — and sweat in it — and it won’t smell funky (a great feature if you’re camping far from laundry facilities). When you return, you can machine wash your Ibex Woolies — and start planning your next outdoor adventure.
