Talk about this Grommet
Hello Everyone!
Blue Moon Bottles is proud to be a Daily Grommet . . . thanks to folks like them, there’s a market for art made from repurposed materials like mine. While my main goal has always been to divert glass from the landfill, I’ve been surprised by each individual bottle’s personality, and how the colors and shapes vary across a wide spectrum. While oenophiles everywhere may gasp in horror to hear me say it, often the bottle has more personality than the wine inside. I hope this helps to make us all see our trash as a potential resource – something to ponder and appreciate rather than cast away. What do you think? Here, amid the clinking of empty wine bottles, I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Here at the Dairy Barn Arts Center, we treasure local talent like Sherri, who not only makes beautiful art pieces out of recycled bottles, but is also having a positive impact on our environment. The collection is gorgeous, and what is so special about the work is that because of the wide variety of shapes and colors of wine bottles on the shelves today, there is always something new to add to your personal collection of wine bottle reclamation art!

Sherri's art is so elegant and inspirational, down to the smallest detail. How often I have wished there was a use for some of those items that are not recyclable. I am thankful that we do have glass recycling where I live, but this is truly a way to add beauty and also repurpose. I love that the community is involved, and that the character of the bottles is preserved. Go Sherri!

I love the idea of repurposing wine bottles for drinking glasses.

I have purchased several sets of tumblers, for my family and for gifts. I especially love the Grolsch beer bottle tumblers, with the relief of Grolsch's beautiful design, and Sherri's candle covers and vases with the wine labels still intact! Both make wonderful gifts for friends and family alike. Beautiful and eco-sensible art!

Nice piece and creative way of looking at your "trash". There was a write-up of Blue Moon Bottles in My San Antonio a couple of years ago. http://mysanantonio.ctwfeatures.com/homestyle/home_20080703_recycled.html

Thanks for your comments and compliments. It's really nice to hear from you.

What creativity and sustainability this Blue Moon art conveys! Not often do environmentalism and art intersect so thoughtfully. I really appreciate it when people can think about both the big picture and the small. Thank you, Sherri! The glassware is beautiful.

I love the items at Blue Moon Bottles! My vase catches the light so beautifully. The tumblers are generous and have a nice weight about them. Sherri's tables are spectacular, too.

Sherri!! Good for you! You figured out a way to finish the edges safely which is the one thing that has been holding me back from doing the same thing for the last few years! I tried a not-inexpensive diamond saw blade but was still ruining more than I could successfully complete. Are you proprietary about your secret? I would really love to do this as a fundraiser for our local schools.

What a perfect idea and execution. Thanks for finding it for me Grommet...I can't wait 'til mine comes.

Many of us here in Athens believe in the idea of "reduce, reuse and recycle", but I think it is rare to find people who are able to incorporate those principles as completely in their lives and work as Sherri does. Sherri is the real deal - she is thoughtful and careful about the environment in every aspect of her life and work. And her art is beautiful and useful - what more could you ask for? I love to give a set of tumblers with a matching vase or ornament for a wedding gift, or for a holiday or birthday gift for a special person.

Wow -- I did submit Blue Moon Bottles, but they are way cooler than I'd even imagined! Terrific video and story, Sherri. I'm so glad we got to learn more about you and these fabulous sustainable products through Daily Grommet.

There is no simple answer. This work requires perseverance and loads of labor. There is, however, more information available these days - books, videos, etc. - on the various methods used. Good luck, Kiddlish!

Sherri - it is so amazing to see the impact you've had on those around you. Thanks everyone for stopping by with your first hand experience with Sherri's work.

Even in the areas where colored glass is recyclable, I would have to assume that being able to repurpose these bottles without completely reprocessing them is better for the environment.

@Kiddlish - it sounds like you were on the right track -- I believe I read that Sherri broke quite a few, too, before getting the process down!

@Barbara - thanks for the great submission!

This story just grew and grew. We were first impressed by how solid and interesting the tumblers and vases were. Then we all had that "ah-ha" moment when you realize they are made from recycled wine bottles. Then the story takes on wings when you learn about Sherri's story and how she and her family live their lives. It has been our distinct pleasure to learn more and more about Blue Moon Bottles.

That’s right, Katherine - Rather than consuming more energy to melt the glass into something new, the idea was to discover the unique features of each individual wine bottle and facilitate it in becoming what it was best suited to become. Barbara - Thank you so much for making this happen by submitting my work!

Sherri - what a great video. You are an inspiration!

I own a set of eight of the blue tumblers and it feels like a special occasion everytime I use them. They are solid and substantial to hold and yet "feel" light and airy--not sure how that can be but it's true! Love 'em!

Sherry's bottle art is all over my house. We have wine bottle pendant lamps in our kitchen, a wine bottle wall in our bathroom. The first set of tumblers Sherri made were a birthday present to me in 2004. They are still my favorite glasses.
Vicky Mattson on Feb 03, 2010
Sherri's work is original, beautiful and affordable. She has a wonderfully innovative mind and is continually adding new art to her line of reclaimed bottles. We love owning her art work. It is useful as well as beautiful - and helping recycling efforts.

I have a set of the tumblers, and they are the perfect size for a drink (my ice doesn't melt before I finish!) I've been using them for about four years, and they are going strong. Great, great quality.

It’s a pleasure to take reclaimed wine bottles and give them new life as tumblers in your homes. I appreciate your support.

I have seen Sherri's tables and other items in a gallery setting and they are spectacular. Her items are sturdy, affordable but mostly elegant!

I love my green glass tumblers that Sherri made for us! We've had them for many years and they still look brand new. The tumblers are very unique and a topic of conversation when we bring them out for our guests. They are amazed and impressed with Sherri's creativeness and her desire to save our environment. I have also seen her exquisite tables, vases, and lights. All of the items that she sells are made with high quality and lots of personal attention. We love your work Sherri!

I have known Sherri for nearly 30 years and nothing she does surprises me. She has always given 110% to every endeavour she embarks upon. I am very proud of her commitment to "reduce, reuse & recycle" for our planet. She passes on these values to her children and it is a true family passion. Kudo's to you Sherri!
