Talk about this Grommet
Hello, Grommetheads!
We're Bruce and Brian Spencer, a father and son team that will be handling questions about the Daily Grommet's very unusual featured product for the day. We're so sure that there will be a ton of questions, we both decided to make ourselves available to answer them. Together we founded Vurtego Pogo and ultimately invented and test flew the Vurtego pogo stick to its leadership position as the "World's Best" high-performance pogo stick. "Modern Marvels" did a feature on us and deemed the Vurtego pogo stick to be the "World's Strongest." Either way, you're probably wondering why in the world you should buy one! We could try in advance to answer all of what we expect will be your FAQ's, but what's the fun in that?
Go ahead, hit us with your best thought-out questions, or your zany off-the-wall questions, and we'll do our best not to laugh and give you straight answers. Just for the record though, pogo sticking is fun, exciting, excellent exercise, and an economical way to get a full-body workout in just a few minutes a day. It's great for older kids (10+) and adults of all ages.

So I know the Vurtego looks extreme - it is!! But I was the tester and was suprised at how quickly I was able to get the feel for. Of course, I'm nowhere near the pro that you guys are, Brian & Bruce - yet! My 12-yr-old son took to it immediately so I think it's a great gift for teens(the perfect alternative to yet another video game system!).

These sticks look awesome!! Do you guys have any plans to get them into retailers?

Thanks for jumping on the forum Jeanne. You're right about it being great for teens, and it's definitely not as extreme as we make it look in our videos. People of all ages buy the V3 for fitness training and if you have ever jumped on a pogo stick as a kid (and who hasn't) it's easy to pick up on and not that difficult. About the only caution here is that riders should weigh about 100 pounds or more to get the best performance out of the V3.

Hi Pezz. Because the V3 is made entirely in the USA out of very high quality aerospace materials, the only way we can keep the cost at a reasonable level is to sell them online. We're working on ways to cut the costs, but bottom line is that the retailers want to mark up the price more than we want them to. The retail price would end up being considerably more than what we charge online and retailers wouldn't be able to compete. Maybe someday!

Amazing video; Brian and Bruce -- you both are great on video! Who wouldn't want one of these after watching your Dad have fun and get a work out? Talk about cross-training . . . while keeping a smile on your face.

Can't wait to spread the word on this one. Not only a great product, but this was one of my favority Daily Grommet videos to date. The jumping smiles must be contagious :)

I can easily see this re-energizing everyone's love for pogo sticking. You say that you have done an eight foot jump, is that a world record?

The current world record is 8'6" over a bar and was set at Pogopalooza 6 by Dan Mahoney, a sixteen year old from Nova Scotia. Pogopalooza is held every summer and is basically the world championships of pogoing. It was held in Pittsburgh this summer and is scheduled for Salt Lake City next Summer.

This is one of those items that you have to recategorize in your head from just a toy to its new potential as a lifelong friend! It's made in the US, built to last, and will provide entertainment and exercise into your 60s and beyond.
The video you taped was great, you guys need your own show!

Katherine,
Actually, Brian has his own show! You can check it out at http://www.guysguide.tv/
He also hosts "Planet X", an extreme sport cable TV program.

Bruce, Can you really travel, like go to school or work, on the Vurtego? Or would you have to be a fitness god to survive a mile of travel?
Jules

@Liz....glad you loved the video. I have watched it at LEAST 15 times. Bruce and Brian really charmed me, and the pogo stick is incredible. I really appreciate you want to spread the word on this Grommet.

Jules: You can travel on the pogo if you are fit enough, but certainly not any great distance. It is just too much of a workout to be good for traveling on. You'd need to stop and take a shower every quarter mile!

This looks so amazing. I have such great memories of never ending pogo stick competitions (we called them wars) with my brother - we'd get way up past 100. Is that possible with this, or is it just too tiring?

Confessions of a grommet spouse…I get to try out (be the Guinea pig for) some of the cool things they test before they become Grommets. This thing is a blast! It doesn't feel like a toy – It’s sturdy and screams quality/high-end. And as much as it doesn’t feel like a toy, it sure plays like one. After you get over the surprise of how effortlessly it propels you up (and how high!), you easily get the feel for it and away you go. I won’t be jumping our minivan (with or without permission), but on Christmas morning, our kids will be jumping snow banks with it….Awesome video!

Hi Dave. You can definitely bounce for a lot more than 100 bounces. It gets tiring when you do high bounces, but you can do low bounces as well. One of the competitions at Pogopalooza is to see who can do the FEWEST bounces in one minute. Now THAT is tiring! That means you are going as high as you can on every bounce. The record is somewhere around 42 bounces in a minute. Needless to say, when you are using the pogo stick for workout purposes, YOU decide how high you want to go and how long you want to work out. You can get a full workout in just a few minutes if you want to.

I've got 2 teens (both around 100 lbs) who would love this - but I'm betting my husband will want to be able to jump on it too. Am I better off going for a Medium? Is that closest to the "one-size-fits-all"?

Hi Maureen. Sorry to be so slow to respond but I'm trying to run a business here while moderating this chat. And Brian flaked on me as well. He's busy filming some stuff for Planet X down in San Diego. Anyway, in answer to your questions, the Medium is the best one-size-fits-all stick, but it may be a little tall for the teens. If they are 5'2" tall or taller, the medium will work fine right now. Otherwise, they'll grow into it in a few weeks if they are typical teens!

This one's for Mark. Thanks for the positive strokes, but be careful jumping over snowbanks. I'm not sure snow and ice are a good mix with pogo sticks. Maybe we need to get working on a spiked bounce bad for traction in the snow. Out here in sunny SoCal we don't have to worry much about snow and ice. :)

Gotta get back to work. We'll keep monitoring comments and answering questions over the weekend, but we may not be all that prompt. Remember, "Patience is a virtue".

This might seem a bit crazy but could you pogo up or down one of those semi-smooth switch back mountain bike trails? Maybe an extreme pogo sport in the making!
I like your style, Ed. Going downhill is a lot easier and less work than pogoing uphill. We've tried riding up a beginners slope ski lift in the summertime and pogoing down and it is a blast. If it's too steep there is a traction problem since our bounce pad is smooth and not very large. A larger pad with "knobbies" would help. One other problem is that dirt and dust can get inside the pogo stick and gum things up. Extra maintenance would be required if you pogoed in the dirt regularly.

This is one amazing looking Grommet! I'm contemplating getting one as a mode of transportation. Vertegoing across Boston Common from the Back Bay to lunch in the financial district seems like a lot more fun (and faster and better work-out)..than walking.

Drew - just be prepared to sweat! Traveling on the Vurtego is quite a workout. Stop to do a pogo performance for the tourists and you may even earn enough cash for lunch!

OK i love pogosticking so i may have to get this. My question is about shoes, do you remember those springy shoes that made you feel like you were on the moon, since they are along the lines of the pogostick, i was wondering if you have any plans to expand into this new product?

Steve

Hi Melissa and Steve, As to the spring shoes, we have no plans in that direction. There is a company that makes high performance spring shoes, but we will be sticking with pogo sticks, which is our area of expertise. And Steve, the best fit for the 6'1"/5'7" combo would be a medium. I'm 6'1" and can easily ride a medium or a large, but someone 5'7" tall would struggle a bit with the large. Also, a medium can be adjusted upward by adding riser bars so it's between a medium and a large, but a large can not be made smaller.

Pogopalooza 7 is in the planning stages at this time. It probably won't be firmed up until late spring. Information should be posted on http://www.xpogo.com when it is available.
