Talk about this Grommet
Let your imagination soar!
Hi! I'm Cathy, the co-founder and Creative Director of Cardboardesign. My early and fond memories of cardboard go way back to days playing with refrigerator boxes and the like. So creativity and cardboard go together for me.

These days, when so many children's toys are pre-colored and passive in nature, Cardboardesign creates eco-friendly playthings to spark joy, action, and imagination. Assembly is simple, so even a toddler can help put together the pieces. Made of extra thick cardboard, the rugged designs stand up to lots of kid play. And children create their own fantasies with crayons, paints, markers and stickers.

The rest is up to your child. The Airplane makes for a special Halloween costume; one ready to take-off again long after the treats are gone. The Dollhouse, with its wide open front, beckons the future decorator or interior designer. The Fort/ Castle conjures up a day at Hogwarts, dreams of Camelot, or a Revolutionary War battle. All Cardboardesign playthings are made In the USA of recycled cardboard, free of toxic chemicals, and safe for children of all ages.

Brilliant idea Cathy! I am a manufactureer of games and have a good line of distribution. I would be happy to help if you'd like. I think this product is going to be a winner. I do love my Daily Grommet - You all always find interesting things.

The airplane did not make it in the video but it is just as cute. It would make a great Halloween costume, just add shoulder straps!

Looks like a winner all around, keeping kids engaged, both boys and girls, letting them use their imagination. Was hoping to see you all take it apart and stick it back in the box for play another time since that's an issue for those w itty bitty houses.

Like the concept, but $50 with shipping for a cardboard toy seems a rather high price point. Have you considered also selling inexpensive downloadable plans that us DIY folks could simply transfer onto the cardboard in our own recycling pile? It would be even more eco friendly since you eliminate the carbon footprint of shipping?
JC on Oct 21, 2009
@JC...thanks for bringing a good idea to our attention. Please contact me (joanne@dailygrommet.com) if you can point me to sites that offer downloadable projects like this for DIY'ers. The Cardboarddesign play structures are sturdy and ready to go for those looking for an easy and engaging creative project or gift. The structures are large which contributes to higher shipping fees. Cardboardesigns uses 100% recycled materials and we are shipping these directly from the manufacturer.

JC, Plans are an interesting idea! We talk about carbon footprint a lot. In trying to be an eco-friendly business we do struggle with some trade-offs. In addition to what Joanne said, the heavy duty cardboard we use is much thicker than the material used for cardboard boxes. And rather than importing our playthings, which would certainly cost less, our products are made solely in the USA of recycled materials.

Steve from Cleve.....The pieces are easy to disassemble because no glue, tape, vecro, or staples are involved. The box was designed for shipping and to be reused--it opens and closes with rugged tabs instead of tape. And at 2 inches thick will slip under the bed or some other small nook.
