Michelle Hamman (pictured) designed her first T-shirt because she wanted to share the concept of “ubuntu” with the world. Ubuntu is a South African term for humaneness, for caring, sharing and being in harmony with all of creation. There’s no direct English equivalent for this heartwarming concept, so Michelle created a T-shirt with ubuntu printed on the front and a poetic description of its meaning on the back. And that’s how MotherTongues, the small business Michelle created with her husband, got its start.
Today the MotherTongues vocabulary spans all sorts of languages and cultures. Special words that have no English equivalent are printed on shirts and hoodies.
Michelle’s design is simple and fresh, and her material choices (100% organic cotton, made according to fair trade practices) reinforce her commitment to mindful living. In addition, for every item sold, MotherTongues donates $1 to the Center for Women in Transition, an organization that helps women and children overcome obstacles.
With all that going for MotherTongues, we’re more than happy to spread the word.
