@Ron (and so many others) I am delighted you shared your experiences with Pearl’s Premium—even @Amy who did not have a successful first try. Your experience gave other people valuable information about how to use Pearl’s.
And Jackson! You are such a wonderful resource for the Daily Grommet community. Where else could people get personalized, knowledegable lawn care advice, real-time. You have made this discussion so rich.
@Everyone. We’ll tell the story of a new Grommet at noon but this exact info about Pearl’s will stay live on our site in perpetuity. You can refer people to the video, and continue to ask questions. We will watch and make sure Jackson knows if someone needs an answer. And….you can order here too in the months ahead…we will pass the orders on to Jackson. (But the free shipping does end at noon EST.)
You can see a magnificent Pearl's Premium lawn and wrap around beautiful and breathtaking garden at an open house garden tour on Saturday the 12th of September at 233 Glen Road in Weston, MA. From 2-4 PM with a lecture on plantings by another expert. No RSVP required.
So on the 12th you can come here at 1 pm for the green lawn and home crash course, then take a short tour of my sustainable house that will be producing 95% of its heating, cooling and energy from the sun and earth, then run just down the road for the garden tour and perennial workshop. a great triple header of info from 1 to 4 pm. The League of Womens Voters in Andover will be hosting activities, as well as towns all over the state have invited me to give workshops and I have a couple more open dates for workshops before they are all filled up for the fall. We can suggest someone to help you install the pearl's premium lawn seed. by calling 508-653-0800 or you can do it yourself. Again, you have only one hour left to buy these Ultra Low Maintenance Pearl's Premium seeds at the $9 off price when you look at the never before offered no shipping charged from the good folks at the Daily Grommet
But for now, he did answer a question earlier which could be helpful: "There is a woman growing a Pearl's Premium lawn in South Carolina. So it can be done in the deep south, but their are a few special considerations. First you have to start it in the fall (not the spring) as soon as soil temps come down to 70 degrees F, when ever that is in your area. Follow the direction on the PearlsPremium.com web site for planting in the deep south which includes aerating and 1/4 inch of organic compost top spread and a few other tips, as well as cutting the grass 4 inches high to hold the moisture and have max depth roots. All this holds moisture, loosens the soil and insures 12 inch roots, that along with optional once a week deep watering during drought periods can help allow you to have a low maintenance lawn even in your super hot climate. But for the rest of us folks north of Washington DC to mid California northward, it is a piece of (chocolate) cake to have this kind of lawn."
And I'm sure Jackson will weigh in if he has additional information regarding the clay soil in your region.
Here is the information about planting Pearl's Premium lawn seed in the Deep South from their website:
Some people have had success with it in the deep south…by planting in the fall as soon as soil temperatures came down to 70 degrees F., to get the roots as deep as possible before summer heat and then they watered it deeply with an inch of water once or twice a week in the warmer months, watering at dawn. In southern climate aeration and top spreading 1/4 inch of organic compost is essential to help aerate the soil to achieve the deepest roots.
@Kathy - One of its benefits is that it is pet friendly because it doesn't require chemicals to thrive. The seed comes in 5 lb bags, and yes, you can get a 5 lb bag of sun seed and also a 5 lb bag of shade seed in the same order.

Then my young daughter (named after my mother, Pearl) asked me, "Daddy, what is the best (lawn) grass in the world?" Because I didn't have an answer, I decided to step up my research to find a lawn solution to protect her and other children from lawn chemicals and to lessen the use of water and runoff into our surface and drinking waters.
This led me to find three PhDs from the National Turf Evaluation Program who are professors at major agricultural universities. They worked with me to narrow down a mix of special native and adaptive seeds. After more research and testing, this has evolved into the unique deep root and very slow growth properties of Pearl's Premium. This is an easy grass to install over your existing grass and does not require tearing up your lawn.
Over 2,000 Pearl's Premium lawns and 22 articles and rave reviews agree.
I want to thank the "Daily Grommet" for featuring this unique patent-pending, breakthrough lawn product. This is an opportunity to have a really "green" lawn that saves you dramatic amounts of time, money, and water; it also lessens your carbon footprint and protects the health of your family, animals, and the earth. I hope you can take advantage of this one-day, first-time offer to save on the $9 shipping and handling per 5 pound bag of seeds. I look forward to reading your comments today and am happy to answer questions.
