I'm looking out over my front lawn right now. Its all Pearl's Premium and looks great! The best think about it - besides zero chemicals - is that the grass is really thick and soft. My golden, Gracie, is lying on it right now, soaking up the sun! I'm delighted to recommend this product.

Sounds great. We have a German Shepherd and his urine burns out parts of our lawn. Does your seed do better than regular grass with this problem. Also, should we be keeping our dog and kids off of the lawn during the full month of watering/establishment?

Sarah - our Gracie does occassionally relieve herself on the lawn (despite our best efforts at training!). since i planted the Pearl's Premium, i've notice the burn spots much less. there still there but the grass is much thicker and longer. keeping it at 3+ inches not only reduces the weeds but also hides the pees!

This sounds great - I'm going to tell all my landscape architect friends about it! Will shade seed grow in deep shade?

Jackson--we have a totally shade covered strip of yard between our house and the neighbors'. Even sod has never taken off in that area. I have given up, basically, on having lawn there and assume it is just not physically possible for any seed to take. (I was planning to lay down stone pavers this fall.) Have you had Pearl's Premium work in such tough-luck situations? (I am not trying to challenge you to make impossible promises....just to lay odds before I lay down the cash and work.)

I am travelling in France now, but glad to hear the discussion about Pearl's Premium. It sounds great. Has it been tried outside the USA? Can I recommend it to friends here?

We live in central New Jersey, where the soil is basically clay. How well does Pearl's Premium get established when the soil is very dense? Even when it's constantly wet, I've had trouble getting any kind of grass established after the soil is disturbed.

How does this seed do contending for water/space with crabgrass? My eastern Masschusetts lawn was beautiful this spring/summer, but all it took was one week of high temperatures and poor watering (I was on vacation and inadvertantly shut off the sprinklers) and when we returned home we had crabgrass everywhere. I've been plucking softball sized bunches of crabgrass and I need to fill the holes in with some kind seed. I'm thinking of trying this product.

I read about Pearls Premium Grass Seed in July. I had the opportunity to feel the texture during a demo being held at the Whole Foods in Bellingham. I saw some pretty amazing pictures of lawns, particularly the one where your grass stays GREEN in Winter! Wow! I had planned on ripping up my present lawn (a disaster) based on the advice of a lawn care company. The Pearls Premium Demo Person told me I could just plant the Pearls Premium Grass Seed right over my present lawn... I do NOT have to take up my present lawn... which is amazing... that the Pearls Premium will take over my lawn within a week or so to a lush, beautiful texture. Hi, Joy - Did you read about the Pearls Premium in The Boston Globe or This Old House? I saw the articles, also. Yes, what did it for us was that mow-once-a-month part. Gorgeous lawn. Very happy. We had tried another brand before. I don't want to disparage another company but the brand starts with a "J". Really disappointing. We are very happy. If this continues to work we are surrounded by people who spend beaucoup bucks on lawn care. One foot root system? That's awesome. Gets rid of the grubs? Works for us. I suspect our neighbors will head to the nearest Whole Foods to buy.

I'm in central Virginia, with a lawn that gets full sun -- am I too far south for this to work?

As a physician and a new home owner, I was looking for a product that was environmentally safe for my 3 daughters and cost effective at the same time. I chose to seed with Pearls Premium and had fantastic results within a few months. The application is quite simple, and the maintenance is minimal. Jackson's product is definitely one of a kind. I highly recommend this product to anyone that is looking to save money on watering, reducing fertilizer application, and most importantly saving time and money on mowing.

Recently, while helping my son put up a fence around his organic garden I noticed how nice his corn, eggplant, squash and tomatoes were doing. Picture perfect- a Better Home & Gardens picture! Not only did the veggies look great, but the whole setting looked great. What made this garden look so darn good? It was the Pearls Premium lawn seed planted last fall. I had barely given it any attention and now it was this luxurious green lawn. Very slowly this lawn had grown where normally nothing but weeds flourished. The adjacent neighbor’s lawn, granted not the most well tended, had the usual variety of weeds and tufts of dried out grass. This was in stark contrast to the lawn surrounding my son’s garden. A lawn not mowed in about a year was now a zero maintenance dark green meadow. It kind of made me think of all the time and money I wisely did not spend on my lawn.

I tried planting Pearl's Premium this spring. My lawn is very sunny and the soil is pretty sandy. Some of it was brought in after construction and didn't seem to have much organic matter. The weeds were already up and starting to flower by the time the soil warmed up for planting, and I think the fact that Pearl's grows slowly let the weeds gain the advantage in my lawn. I'm wondering what to do this fall to help crowd out the weeds so we achieve a beautiful lawn. Should I replant, and how heavily should I use the seed? True confessions: I wasn't able to water faithfully every day in the spring, but am set up to do so now.

Last fall I was looking for options on organic lawns. A neighbor saw the segment about Pearl's Premium on Channel 5 news and told me about it. My first feeling was that it was way too good to be true.but then I realized you probably can't go on T.V. with a fake claim. I had a Pearl’s Premium lawn installed by Jackson Madnick’s crew and every single claim he made on his website became a reality under my eyes. I have the best lawn in town and it's all done without any chemicals! Very few weeds, I am mowing it once per month - this is really the most amazing part of it! I don't need to water it, it has no grubs or other insects. Comparing to the other lawns all full of chemicals and watered several times per day by expensive sprinkle systems, my lawn has amazingly few weeds. How many? Well, so many that I have been successfully controlling them only by hand pulling them. The other nice feature is that my lawn is green all winter long. And here is another little secret not mentioned on the website: it repels mosquitoes! The landscaping company I use for the flower beds could not believe the extent of the root system of my lawn- the roots of my super grass are deep and almost impossible to penetrate, hard to get into to edge the flower beds! No wonder the weeds are having such a hard time! Keeping the grass about 3-4 inches long is also extremely helpful at preventing weeds since the roots are always shaded. I am going to follow Jackson's "recipe" further this fall and will have his team come once more and proceed with the overseeding of my new lawn. I can't recommend this seed highly enough - I feel fantastic about having this lawn not only because of the little work it requires but mostly because of the positive impact it has on my family and on the environment. I don't feel guilty for wasting natural resources or making my family sick from using chemicals or negatively impacting the environment just for the sake of having a green lawn! Will this grass seed work in the clay soil and warmer climate of North Carolina? If not,any ideas about where to find such?

But for now, he did answer a question earlier which could be helpful: "There is a woman growing a Pearl's Premium lawn in South Carolina. So it can be done in the deep south, but their are a few special considerations. First you have to start it in the fall (not the spring) as soon as soil temps come down to 70 degrees F, when ever that is in your area. Follow the direction on the PearlsPremium.com web site for planting in the deep south which includes aerating and 1/4 inch of organic compost top spread and a few other tips, as well as cutting the grass 4 inches high to hold the moisture and have max depth roots. All this holds moisture, loosens the soil and insures 12 inch roots, that along with optional once a week deep watering during drought periods can help allow you to have a low maintenance lawn even in your super hot climate. But for the rest of us folks north of Washington DC to mid California northward, it is a piece of (chocolate) cake to have this kind of lawn."

And I'm sure Jackson will weigh in if he has additional information regarding the clay soil in your region.

Just a comment about growing Pearl's Premium in Atlanta. Up until about 6 months ago, we were in a 2 year drought.No rain and no sprinkler for my Fescue lawn so it burned up in the Georgia sun.I have a side yard (shade) and back yard (sun/shade) which were looking grim so when I saw Jackson's Grommet,I thought it was worth a shot. I followed his instructions carefully (aerate etc.)with the correct shade/sun seed and I now have beautiful grass. I can't wait until Spring for the full glory. I do have to say that since I started the process in mid-September, Atlanta has had glorious weather.. warm sun one day then soft showers the next so it has been the perfect setting. Jackson, I only regret that I forgot to take before pictures but will certainly send up successful after shots.

@LFS - regarding NC this is what Jackson says: "Jeanne's response covered it well. Again we have many people in N.C. growing our grass right now. Atlanta is significantly more south than N.C where it is growing. The info of material on our web site PearlsPremium.com under the FAQ section touches on planting in the deep south and the only other thing is to address the clay drainage factor, that she can put down a 1/4 inch of organic compost and core aerate, both will help with drainage before putting down the seed. If it is absolute clay to the surface with no soils, she will have to put down 3-4 inches of top soil before seeding."

Some people have had success with it in the deep south…by planting in the fall as soon as soil temperatures came down to 70 degrees F., to get the roots as deep as possible before summer heat and then they watered it deeply with an inch of water once or twice a week in the warmer months, watering at dawn. In southern climate aeration and top spreading 1/4 inch of organic compost is essential to help aerate the soil to achieve the deepest roots.

This is more of a question. I do not know why, nut I can not grow grass in my yard. Now I,m down to nothing but dirt. My friend blames it on an old tree that is in other yard, and he blames the root of the tree, but other people have grass, and I,m sure the same roots. Will this product work in a yard like mine?? I have one dog, but I can walk him, and I usually do anyway. I miss grass, and I,ve tried everything I know. I,m doing something wrong, And I,m not bragging, and I know it,s different but I,m a good gardner when it comes to other plants, but grass, I,m missing something, besides the grass. Please let me know.

Could Pearl's Premium grass seed be grown in the Southwest, Albuquerque, NM, to be exact?

I was wondering if there was a way to get a mixture of the Sun and Shade Grasses in one Order. My back yard is sloped and part of it is in the sun a lot and some of it does not get much sun. That is one of the reasons I have problems, the other is because I have a dog, I was also wondering how well this stands up to pets. It sounds like a wonderful product and I am really interested, but would like to know about those 2 things first. Thanks so much,' Kathy Alvis

@Mark - the seed was developed to thrive in more temperate regions. You may have success by using the deep south instructions discussed earlier. Good luck!

@Kathy - One of its benefits is that it is pet friendly because it doesn't require chemicals to thrive. The seed comes in 5 lb bags, and yes, you can get a 5 lb bag of sun seed and also a 5 lb bag of shade seed in the same order.
