Talk about this Grommet
Soda savvy
Hi Daily Grommet fans! We are so excited to have SodaStream featured here today. Our system enables you to turn the water you drink into fresh, fizzy sparkling water and soda at the touch of a button, with no clean-up.
So – you might be asking yourself – why would someone want to make soda?! What’s wrong with the bottles and cans I buy at the store?
Well, for one thing…they’re bottles and cans. The average American uses about 675 beverage packages each year, of which only 30% or so are recycled. The rest of those bottles and cans end up in landfills, or worse. Plus there’s the transport costs. The fancy sparkling water you find in the grocery store has traveled thousands of miles to reach those shelves. And even your favorite sodas have hundreds of miles on them; even before you take them home, they’ve been to the bottling plant, a warehouse and then to the store.
SodaStream offers over 25 flavors – including regular flavors with no high-fructose corn syrup, and diet flavors without aspartame. We have fruit flavors, caffeine-free options, all-natural flavor essences for flavored sparkling water…even an energy drink. You control the flavor and the fizz, so you can have your fizzy drinks exactly how you like them.
Making your own sparkling water and soda is a great money-saver, too. On an ongoing basis, you’ll make seltzer and sparkling water for less than 25 cents per liter, and soda for about 25 cents per can – with no lugging, no storing, and no recycling. The SodaStream maker is easy to use, requires no batteries or electricity, and no clean-up.
So watch the video Daily Grommet made to see how it works -- I look forward to reading your comments and will check in to answer your questions. Thanks!

I love the idea that I can make my own soda. No more cans and bottles to recycle. I like that the flavor selection is so great and that you can control the amount of fizz. This really sounds like a great product. I never knew something like this existed. Thanks for the info and the giveaway.

I never drink soda -- I've sworn off artificial sweeteners, and regular sodas have way too much sugar. But I would LOVE to be able to make juice/water combos fizzy! This sounds like a really cool product.

This is amazing! Our family has been trying very hard to eliminate all products that have high fructose corn syrup i them! It has made grocery shopping a longer process because now I look at the ingredients in every product. My 16 year old son misses his soda and as soon as I saw this I thought of him and then I looked at the different flavors and the diet option and it started me thinking of all the refreshing drink I could make for me and all my friends. It would be a great change from drinking flavored seltzer water which as we know doesn't truly have much flavor. thanks for telling me about this machine! If I don't win it - I may just have to squeeze it into the family budget!

This is neato! I gave up soda a long time ago because of the high sugar content, but ginger ale and cream soda are my favorite comfort foods! How nice to be able to have it to my taste and with less guilt. If I'm not the lucky winner, this is definitely going on my Christmas list! Thanks!

My two good friends Paula and Ronni both raved to me so much about the SodaStream and gave me demonstrations on how delicious it was, easy to use, good for the environment, less expensive.... that I just had to submit it for consideration as a Grommet to our discovery gals. Sure enough, they loved it too and it became a Grommet! Thanks Paula and Ronni! Anyone else have a great Grommet idea? Tell us about it!

I always had trouble drinking enough water every day until I discovered fizzy water. Now, I drink plenty of fizzy, but I sure do get tired of lugging all those cans back to the store for recycling. A SodaStream system would certainly make my life easier (and it would be great to save some money, too) !

WOW! My family would love this! Would give me an option for the kids that doesn't include Coke and Dr Pepper! My husband is going thru way too many sodas lately so I'm sure this would also help his, ummm, "bottom" line. lol

Like a lot of people here I gave up soda because of the high sugar content and diet because of the artificial sweeteners. Would like to be able to make sparkling beverages with stevia or without any sweetness at all. Best of both worlds!

I gave up my flavored sparkling water because of the plastic bottle usage. To think I can go back to enjoying it, instead of "suffering" through boring tap water is a miracle! I felt to guilty using all those plastic bottles, now I can help keep the planet and green AND put the sparkle back into my daily drink!! Thank you so much!
I love the concept! Great for the environment and none of the bad sugars! This would be a great addition to our little family :)

I think it is a great concept. At our office, we always run out of the soda someone is looking for so this would be a good way to always have stock on hand.

This is such a great concept! I'm really trying to avoid the high fructose corn syrup, and soda is such a huge offender! My kids (and husband!) would love this!

What a great investment, good for the environment and the wallet. This is the way of the future.
Can I carbonate juice?
This sounds like a great product. We drink diet soda and Crystal Light in our house, but I worry about all the chemicals that those contain and all the plastic those use. We would really enjoy making our own beverages so that we can all drink more water while being more environmentally friendly. Thanks for sharing with us.

I would love to have one of these first of all because we drink a lot of plain seltzer with lemon or lime in it and this would taste even better and secondly because my husband has to schlep all of the cans and bottles to the recycling plant and this would make his life easier too.
This reminds me of when I was a child and my father used to have cases of CO2 cartridges delivered, just like the cases of milk that the milkman brought, and he would make seltzer at home all the time. It's a great idea and helps the environment at the same time.

I must admit, an ocassional soda is a guilty pleasure of mine... I'm sitting here with a Coke right now. It sure would be great to have the variety of flavors, and the convenience of not lugging all those 12 packs and liter bottles, but the BEST part is the reduced footprint on the environment with the elimination of all that plastic and aluminum AND the HFCS-free is key. It's a WIN-WIN-WIN cool product... Count me in!

This seems amazing! I love Italian sodas, which are made by adding flavored syrup to sprite or soda water and some cream, and this would be a quick and simple way to make them at home. Plus, it'd be amazing in my college dorm. Love it!

As the parent of two teens with a steady stream of them in the house, I love the no cans, no high-fructose corn syrup. And, while juice and seltzer is a popular combination here, making it sounds like a very cool idea. Neat Grommet!

We have the SodaStream and it is exactly as advertised! Cheaper, greener, healthier! Highly recommend it, especially for large families like ours that were going through gallons of seltzer water! Also, the kids think its a blast to make the soda/seltzer!
I'd love to be able to make my own soda water at home. It'd save so many bottles!

Wow this is so cool to read everyone's comments...There are so many great reasons to use a home soda maker - you guys really 'get it'!!
To Julia - The soda maker is used for carbonating water only...but after the water is fizzy, you can add whatever you like. For my 3 year-old's birthday last weekend, we used frozen pink lemonade concentrate and used fizzy water instead of flat for a special birthday treat. A lot of people like to add pomegrate juice for a nutritious spritzer. And the Italian soda syrups go really well with it, too. You are limited only by your culinary imagination!

This will save money, compared to buying bottles of Poland Springs, in the long run. And it avoids creation and recycling of bottles. And we don't have to schlep the bottles back to the store. I just ordered one!
I had one of these systems as a kid, some 25+ years ago... it was pretty cool.
I like the concept of making drinks without HFCS.

Isn't this still releasing Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere? Co2 is Carbon Dioxide is it not? So lessening your carbon footprint shouldn't be a bullet... you should be touting the "less garbage" aspect of it... and if you drink more soda because of it... are you then pretty much pulling a wash over the whole?
Dan

Hi Dan -
You are correct that the CO2 in SodaStream is no different than the CO2 in any other soda. So if you are replacing your storebought drinks with SodaStream, it's effectively 'carbon neutral.' However, every SodaStream carbonator makes 60 liters of sparkling water, and every bottle of sodamix makes the equivalent of 34 cans of soda. You definitely reduce your carbon footprint when you consider the transport miles associated with trucking all of those beverages around. Also, less garbage = less manufacturing of cans and bottles...another reduction in oil use and carbon footprint. There's actually some really good math on this at CarbonRally: http://www.carbonrally.com/challenges/20-plastic-bottles

First of all, Its Carbon Monoxide that is extremely harmful. All Carbon Dioxide does is make things bubbly.
Also, Carbon is an element that is present on our planet, it is a natural substance that keeps this planet warm. We would all freeze to death without it.

I bought a machine simular to this one about 15years ago we really enjoyed it. only issue was getting flavors (had to buy Gal. of each ) and being able to get the co2 and flavors. after only few months could not find anywhere. My machine is still in good condition as far as I knnow. I held on to it hoping I could again one day buy the products to use. would love to have one of these but would be upset to invest and it become out dated or wouldn't be able to get products any more.

Well that's a neat little machine. Just wait until those kids realize they can carbonate anything with water in it. Did your beer go flat? Not anymore!
But if you were going to spend a bit of money on a carbonation machine, consider checking out a full soda keg. If you've ever taken a look at brewing beer, that's one method to present your beverage through a tap. Not like anyone has any plans to drink 5 gallons of cola, but hey, eventually we all do.
