Talk about this Grommet
Clean water for everyone
We are excited that Daily Grommet is featuring the Tap Project and the Tap Water Bottle during World Water Week. The Tap Project is a nationwide campaign that provides safe drinking water to the world’s children. What started as a pilot effort in New York City in 2007 has now become an internationally recognized fundraising program that helps UNICEF provide clean and safe drinking water to millions of children around the world.
During World Water Week, March 22-28, 2009, the Tap Project will be raising vital funds and awareness for UNICEF’s water and sanitation programs. Just $1 provides a child with clean drinking water for 40 days! Nearly 900 million people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water, with waterborne disease being the second highest cause of childhood death in the world – killing 4,200 children every day.
Tap project
We believe that no child should ever die from a preventable cause. UNICEF has saved more children's lives than any other humanitarian organization and is committed to doing whatever it takes to achieve the goal of reaching zero preventable deaths. Please help UNICEF put an end to the preventable deaths of children due to a lack of clean water.

I like this. The bottle is really stylish, and I think it would look great on the table. Great cause. Thanks for sharing!

I just watched a documentary about global water supply issues - shocking to think that what we take for granted (safe, clean water supply) is such a rarity. I like how this bottle serves as a reminder and conversation starter, whether we've got guests over, or just with my kids at the dinner table.

I hope this helps UNICEF make a real difference. We are so lucky here in the U.S.

I'll send $2 to UNICEF directly and skip the the considerable carbon footprint of shipping me a glass bottle with the unnecessary and silly label. Are you people just putting me on?
Patrick Ferraro on Mar 26, 2009
@Patrick, thanks for adding to the conversation. If there are others who would like to support the Tap Project directly, you can link directly to their site here: Tap Project. Thanks for considering supporting this effort.
Barbara on Mar 26, 2009

@Patrick I applaud your making a direct contribution to UNICEF. Remember this Tap Project (and the bottle) originated with restaurants….and replacing their disposable mineral water bottles has a considerable positive environmental impact. Because of the UNICEF beneficiary it is “worth it” to highlight the cause with a special bottle and label. To create awareness and participation.

Extending that awareness to home tap water consumption is simply a natural progression. Could you inspire the same conversation with your guests, or children, with a plain old water pitcher that you already own? Of course. But the likelihood of the UNICEF initiative being highlighted is much lower in that scenario. The bottle label itself inspires the conversation, and constant reminder of the project. Having a persistent reminder, as opposed to a one-time private donation, is a big thing for a young non-profit project.

At the end of the day, if all we do is let people know about the Tap Project, Daily Grommet has been a positive force. Knowing you are going to contribute to UNICEF is one important step towards that goal. Thanks so much for your thoughts and actions.

I had no idea it was World Water Week, so I checked it out. There is a video on YouTube with Jennifer Connelly walking to Central Park to get dirty water for her family as many African mothers have to do every day. Imagine if we all had to do that. I am glad to be more aware of this problem and the Tap Project.

As you reveal each new Grommet it reveals a lot about you, Daily Grommet! I'm so impressed with your careful choice of products and projects to lend your voice to. I do often think about the blessing of clean water that we have and cannot imagine living without it. This sounds like a great project to support.

What a cool thing - I love this glass! Our Family has shut off our house water and are going a Week Without Water for World Water Week and waterislife.com. We shut off our house water on Sunday, March 22 in honor of World Water Day. Visit our adventures and check out our media coverage during the week on our blog - www.waterislife.com - you may even LOL!

Thanks, Daily Grommet for helping to raise awareness about the tremendous need for clean water. As a doctor who has been involved in working to improve the health of children in Central America, I have seen first-hand that unsanitary water supplies cause significant health problems throughout the developing world.
Claudia on Mar 26, 2009
@Kristine Thanks for letting us know about your family's commitment to World Water Week. I am so impressed with your actions. Your children will never forget what you taught them.

HI everyone - Just got a great update and thank you note from UNICEF we wanted to share with you ...

Thanks to the generous volunteer support, corporate donations, and the support of the tens of thousands of diners who donated $1 for the tap water they usually enjoy for free, the 2009 Tap Project raised $819,223 for UNICEF's Water and Sanitation programs!

The funds will be designated towards the construction of boreholes, wells, water systems and sanitation facilities as well as provide emergency water and sanitation supplies to those who have been displaced from their homes in the Central African Republic, Haiti, Sudan and Togo. In addition, the Tap Project recorded more than 1.5 billion media impressions and $1.75 million in donated volunteer time!

We couldn't have done it without you! Once again, thank you for your hard work and dedication in making the 2009 Tap Project a great success.
