@Patrick I applaud your making a direct contribution to UNICEF. Remember this Tap Project (and the bottle) originated with restaurants….and replacing their disposable mineral water bottles has a considerable positive environmental impact. Because of the UNICEF beneficiary it is “worth it” to highlight the cause with a special bottle and label. To create awareness and participation.
Extending that awareness to home tap water consumption is simply a natural progression. Could you inspire the same conversation with your guests, or children, with a plain old water pitcher that you already own? Of course. But the likelihood of the UNICEF initiative being highlighted is much lower in that scenario. The bottle label itself inspires the conversation, and constant reminder of the project. Having a persistent reminder, as opposed to a one-time private donation, is a big thing for a young non-profit project.
At the end of the day, if all we do is let people know about the Tap Project, Daily Grommet has been a positive force. Knowing you are going to contribute to UNICEF is one important step towards that goal. Thanks so much for your thoughts and actions.
Thanks to the generous volunteer support, corporate donations, and the support of the tens of thousands of diners who donated $1 for the tap water they usually enjoy for free, the 2009 Tap Project raised $819,223 for UNICEF's Water and Sanitation programs!
The funds will be designated towards the construction of boreholes, wells, water systems and sanitation facilities as well as provide emergency water and sanitation supplies to those who have been displaced from their homes in the Central African Republic, Haiti, Sudan and Togo. In addition, the Tap Project recorded more than 1.5 billion media impressions and $1.75 million in donated volunteer time!
We couldn't have done it without you! Once again, thank you for your hard work and dedication in making the 2009 Tap Project a great success.

During World Water Week, March 22-28, 2009, the Tap Project will be raising vital funds and awareness for UNICEF’s water and sanitation programs. Just $1 provides a child with clean drinking water for 40 days! Nearly 900 million people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water, with waterborne disease being the second highest cause of childhood death in the world – killing 4,200 children every day.
We believe that no child should ever die from a preventable cause. UNICEF has saved more children's lives than any other humanitarian organization and is committed to doing whatever it takes to achieve the goal of reaching zero preventable deaths. Please help UNICEF put an end to the preventable deaths of children due to a lack of clean water.
