Hidden Secrets of Savannah

For me, a staunch northerner, coming to Savannah for college was like being a fish out of water. Having grown up in Washington DC all my life, I was coming to a city where the pace nowhere near matches that of our capitol city and where buildings tend to be smaller, not taller.

However, once I got over the heat (even in February!) and the occasional whiff of the nearby paper mill – reminding us all of its presence – I discovered Savannah’s many hidden gems. They’re not on the top of every tourist’s list, but to me, they really encapsulate Savannah’s character.

What to do in Savannah - Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park

One of my favorite areas of Savannah is one that is free of charge – Forsyth Park. Located in the heart of the historical district, Forsyth Park covers 30 acres and dates back to the 1840s. Whether you want to sit and relax or play with a Frisbee, Forsyth is the perfect place to do so. With two beautiful fountains, a stage, tennis courts and a basketball court, Forsyth always has a plethora of activities happening. Jazz festivals, outdoor concerts and movies in the park are just a few of the city organized events that have happened there; just walking through under the overhanging Spanish moss gives you a sense of calm.

Zunzi's always crowded entrance way

It is the South, so food does play a huge part in Savannah’s culture. When you think of Savannah, the food that comes to mind is usually grits, biscuits and gravy. However, whenever I miss food in Savannah, I always want Zunzi’s. The food that they serve is nothing short of extraordinary; a mix of South African, Swiss, Italian and Dutch cuisine, Zunzi’s never fails to impress. They say you know how good the food is by how long the line is – walking by Zunzi’s, I always see the line snaking out the door.

Gallery Espresso's inviting exterior

If you’re not in the mood for a lot of food (which Zunzi’s always gives you), then make sure you stop by the neighborhood coffee shop, Gallery Espresso. Gallery is not the only coffee shop in Savannah, but it’s my favorite. I always see people I know there (which may be a bad thing when I’m trying to do homework!), no matter what time of day it is. Although I’m not a coffee drinker, Gallery always has something I want to try; from their hot chocolate to their quiches. One of my favorite things to do is to sit in one of their comfy chairs with a book – it’s a relaxing way to spend an afternoon if I don’t have any pressing need to be somewhere.

what to do in Savannah

The Starland's wonderful backyard seating

The last place in Savannah that I will introduce you happens to be a little off of the beaten path. Located a couple minutes from downtown, the Starland Café is one of my favorite places to eat lunch. Right next to the Savannah dog park, the Starland’s bright orange exterior is what immediately draws your attention. Just sitting and eating in their back patio takes you away from the rest of Savannah; it’s as if you are sitting in your own backyard talking to your neighbors. The food…oh, the food! I don’t think I’ve tried anything there that I didn’t like. From their amazing Panini’s to their delicious salads, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

I hope that by telling you a little bit about some of my favorite places in Savannah, many of you will be able to experience the city as I have! Even if you’ve been to Savannah before, you may not have discovered these places. For those who haven’t, maybe it will inspire a trip down South!

Enjoying the Great Outdoors

Now that we’re (finally!) thawing out after winter, we’re busy searching for excuses to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. From camping and hiking to road trips and cycling, we can’t wait to get moving again.

hiking guide

Our tester, Paraag Maddiwar, used the Voltaic Systems solar charger to charge his iPod twice and his camera once during his hike at Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania last month.

One of the challenges with a weekend camping trip or a hike, however, is that it’s not always possible to recharge your camera, cell phone, or iPod. We’re more than happy to leave the laptop at home, but who doesn’t want to listen to music and take pictures while enjoying the great outdoors? With the travel solar chargers  we’re featuring today, solar charging is easier than ever. So now we definitely have no excuses to stay inside!

As we plan our getaways, we’ve been turning to a few websites  that are worth sharing:

National Park Service – This is the first place to look when you want to find parks near you or near your destination. The website even has a handy sorting feature where you can search by topic or type of activity.

Tripleblaze.comHere you can find advice on the best camping and hiking sites as well as equipment reviews. They even have information on guided trips.

BestHike.com – There are lists for every continent on this website, and you can update information to add your own knowledge of the trails — a great hiking guide.

ABC-of-Hiking – This website has active forum discussions and is a great place to obtain how-to information as well as advice on hiking locations.

BootsnAll – This is a one-stop travel website with information on flights, advice on destinations, and opportunities to find travel partners. BootsnAll is a great place to look if you’re planning a trip overseas, and there’s plenty of information about how best to enjoy the outdoors in great hiking destinations like New Zealand.

Do you have some great resources that you use when you’re planning an outdoor getaway? We’d love to hear about them!

Being a LEGO Spy

I just couldn’t resist a tour of the Lego booth at the Toy Fair in New York City.  As a kid my brother was obsessed with Legos.  Now my two sons, nephews, and nieces are all huge fans.  LEGOs are one of those toys that you really never outgrow and I noticed that Lego fans are fanatical and can span the ages. There are websites and blogs like brickzone.net that speculate when new sets will arrive and provide support groups for custom designs. I was giddy to see the new products and get the inside scoop.  Upon checking in at the LEGO booth, I was greeted with, “I can’t wait to tell my mother I got to hang with a Daily Grommet girl today”.  OK, that had nothing to do with Legos but it did make the Lego tour even better.

Lego

Here’s what I got to see inside the secret booth filled with new Lego sets for 2011.  A cool Alien Mothership (7065) from the Alien Conquest series that actually has a sound brick and a handle so kids can run around and fly the space ship.  I understand that this is the first building set to make sound. I like how Lego listened to its customers and added an arm or handle so kids can actually play with the building sets.

This is a picture of the New Cars 2 Legos series that is co-branded with Disney.  These sets will launch in May right around the time of the movie.  Notice the black boxes.  Yes I got to see what will be coming soon.

Lego - Pirates

Lego is also partnering with the Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides movie (available in May).  Again, look closely at the box with the words “Confidential” on it.

Lego - farm

This is the first chicken and goat for Lego from the Kingdoms series (available in August).

new products - legos

The Space Center set from the City series (available in August) was designed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Space Shuttle. I hate to admit it but I can remember back to April 12, 1981 when the first space shuttle was launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to orbit the earth for the first time.  I love that Lego is celebrating a little bit of history and sharing that with our children.

After getting the inside scoop about what’s next in Lego world, I had an incredible dream to be able to partner with Lego and help them launch a new line.   Can you imagine if Daily Grommet got to help launch the next new Lego designed building series.   I would be the coolest mom, aunt, friend ever.

What is/was your favorite LEGO series ever?

5 of our favorite food blogs

There are several common “likes” around Grommet HQ. Many of us like outdoor activities, some of us like a great beauty find or an innovative tech gadget — but I think it’s safe to say ALL of us like a tasty unique food find. When we aren’t sampling delicous food Grommet ideas, we are scouring the web and feasting with our eyes. Here are some of our favorite food blogs, we hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we do!

food Blogs

  • With Style & Grace – Lisa captures the amazing beauty in food. She bakes, cooks and takes all of her own (gorgeous) photographs.
  • Tartelette – Helene has been creating amazing dishes and capturing the images since 2006. The french foodie is one we love to follow (and often makes us drool on our keyboards)!
  • Amy Atlas – We love seeing the most recent sweet dessert stylings Amy has done and are having a blast reading along as she shares in her journey of creating a book.
  • The Pioneer Woman – Aside from the fact that she is most likely on everyone’s “top list,” her food just tastes GOOD. Believe me, I’ve made almost all of her recipes!
  • Cookin’ Canuck – Dara posts recipes (like this one) that get our tummies rumbling!

Hopefully you have found a new food blog (or two!) to read. We’d love to know what are your favorites, tell us below!

Picking just one at the NYIGF

When I was asked back to be a judge for the NYIGF “Blogger’s Choice Awards” it was time to get my brave on. In 3 short hours I needed to scan the over 200 booths in Accent on Design, get to know the artist and then appear on video. I was looking for the little guy — the starving artist. In a sea of flashy well designed booths and products, you would think it would be hard to find the new guy. In my opinion the new guy is usually easier to find. The new guy usually has a smile on their face, a sparkle in their eye and well a story to tell. Not just an elevator pitch, a real story. A story of how they got there and where they want to go. So when I walked into the American Design Club booth at the NYIGF I knew I had found the real deal. A bunch of storytellers. I spent some time in the booth getting to know the artists and knew that I had found my nomination. What made it harder is I found a bunch of real deals. I chose three artists to interview from the American Design Club.

My first interview was with Steph Mantis. What caught my eye with Steph’s work was the intricate details of the animals butts and the humor in her art. She also just happen to grow up in New England.

Surprised by Paper Art

One of my favorite professors used to say “What is a blank piece of paper? An opportunity.”
These artists certainly make the most of every paper opportunity they’re given.

Yulia Brodskaya was born in Russia, and now lives in the UK making her incredible Papergraphics. I love keeping up with what she’s been up lately to in the News section of her website (especially when she posts process videos!).

I thought this one struck a Dailly Grommet chord.

Yup, that's all paper.

Interesting oddities found at the NYIGF

It’s funny what catches my eye at big shows like the New York International Gift Fair (or NYIGF). I am usually pressed for time and have a jammed pack schedule.  This year was no different.  As I walked the aisles I found some fun products that put a smile on my face.

This is Areaware’s newest color “Bank in the Form of a Pig” in metallic blue.  The designer is Harry Allen.  The pig is made out of Resin and Marble.  The cast is from a pig that died of natural causes(gross).  The bank holds up to  $10,000 in dollar bills. That is what I call a great rainy day account.

Working Class Studio was showcasing a new vase design by Corey Green, a Senior at SCAD. If you look closely you will see that the stand is laser cut acrylic and the actual vase is a colorful balloon.  Working Class Studios is working with Corey to bring this product to market.  This is definitely on my watch list.

Spirithoods: Our tribe has spoken

Today’s Grommet, SpiritHoods, began with this curious photo we posted on our Facebook wall …

Jules snapped the photo while she was walking the streets of NY during a recent business trip. The animal hat caught her eye and its wearer happily agreed to being in the spotlight.

So along with the photo, here’s what she asked our Facebook community:

Would you wear this? I saw so many versions of this “giant animal head” hat all over New York this week. Both on men and women. >Jules

Within instants, we’d received over 100 responses (you can read them all here on our Facebook page). It was obvious we’d hit a nerve. Our Discovery Team began to dig deeper into this idea, vowing to give the people what they wanted: animal-inspired hats.

SpiritHoods is perhaps the most “socially sourced” Grommet to date (how’s that for Citizen Commerce in action?). And that makes today a particularly special day for me as the Community Manager here at Daily Grommet. So speak up folks … we hear you!

Now,  let’s keep doing it. Have another Grommet idea? Submit it to our Citizens’ Gallery or tell us about it on Facebook or Twitter.

BCA “One Product Challenge” follow up

Back in October after a bit of breast cancer awareness in the form of pink hair I challenged myself, the Daily Grommet team, and our great community out there to replace one product they use with a product free of chemicals linked to cancer. This One Product Challenge was initiated during national breast cancer awareness month but has lasted much longer. This challenge has turned out to be a great learning experience, and a means to make connections with people much more versed in safe products than I. The advice and bits of wisdom I’ve gathered as a result of the challenge are valuable and worth sharing with you.

Chemical Free Beauty Products

When I was doing research about chemicals in everyday products I admit being overwhelmed. I’m not the only one! Joy Wicks was also overwhelmed when she started looking at what was in her cosmetics. Joy was on the search for the best beauty products that were also chemical free.

This is Joy, presumably rocking all natural makeup!

She’s come a long way, and has done a lot of research as to what is safe to use and what is not. She uses her knowledge for her shop, Natural Joy Beauty, just outside of Salt Lake City, UT. She has compiled a list of ingredients to avoid and has strict standards for what she carries in her store. She also would like to offer a deal to all of you! Use the code DG15 for a 15% discount, now until 5/31/11.

Here's Danika with her daughter!

Danika, a representative for Miessence, also reached out with some excellent resources for checking up on what’s in your products! She suggested looking into the Organic Consumers Association’s Coming Clean Campaign, Good Guide, and Skin Deep as resources to find clean, and not so clean, products. She warns not to use these as your sole resource, however, because of the lack of data available to some ingredients. The best way to be sure a product is safe, she advises, is to check for a USDA or ACO Organic Certification.  Soleil Organique also commented, suggesting the Environmental Working Group as another good resource!

Look for USDA Organic Certification!

I went to visit The Natural Market in Groton, MA to get some face-to-face advice. Dottie was very helpful there, and told me that her favorite natural beauty product was organic coconut oil. Shari, a Daily Grommet reader, agreed in the blog comments. They both said it is the best moisturizer they’ve ever used, and use it every day.

evanhealy skin care

Here at the offices Kate and Wendy replaced their skin care routines, using evanhealy skin care products. Once they tested it as a Grommet they were hooked, and still use it every day.

Safe laundry detergent

Charlie's Soap

Wendy also uses No More Dirty Looks by Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt as her natural skin care bible.  Julia Elmer, a good friend of Daily Grommet, told us that she gets her natural beauty products at Whole Foods. (Whole Foods has a great video about all natural body care products, by the way!) The challenge reached out to our California team, too. Tori switched out her laundry products with Charlie’s Soap, another loved Grommet. Tori reported that after the switch to chemical free detergent her family’s sensitive skin was oh-so thankful. She noted “No more itchy or irritated skin, and it works just as well as the chemical-laden detergents! I like knowing I’m not drenching our clothes in toxins.”

One of the best experiences I’ve had during my natural body care experiments was making a connection with Blaire Kessler, the creator of Pristine Beauty products, and getting to try out some of her amazing hair products! My favorites were definitely the shampoo and conditioner.  I only used them for a couple weeks and I saw a drastic improvement in my hair. My frizz was gone, (my Dad sometimes calls me Mufassa in the morning… having less frizz is a big deal for me!), and my hair got really soft and shiny. On top of that, it smells amazing! After trying a couple other natural shampoos, I am definitely going back for more Locks of Fame and highly recommend Pristine Beauty products.

Blaire Kessler, the super woman behind Pristine Cosmetics

Best shampoo I've ever used!

What really made trying Blaire’s products special, though, was that she created them after getting a breast cancer diagnosis. She couldn’t find any products that could live up to the standards she was looking for, so she created her own! How’s that for determination? A portion of each Pristine Beauty sale is donated to the Young Survival Coalition and the Cancer Prevention Coalition, too. Blaire’s story is really inspiring and she also knows her stuff! She gave me some great tips on how to best use her products, and pretty soon you’ll be able to watch her giving tutorials about them on the Pristine Beauty YouTube Chanel.

After trying out a bunch of organic and natural products in the last couple months I have a bit of advice of my own to give. The first thing I can suggest is letting yourself get used to it for a couple days before assuming they won’t work! When I tried new deodorants it took a couple days for me to feel like they were working, and for the first few days of trying natural hair products my hair got a little greasy. It does, however, get better.  After getting used to natural products regular ones smell like chemicals and feel harsh. Getting used to natural products was easy, but the opposite isn’t true. I don’t think I’ll be able to go back! The last bit of advice I have is to reach out to experts. They are always more than willing to share their knowledge and can be most helpful.

Have you tried switching over to cleaner, safer products?  Do you have your own advice to share? Let us know with a comment!
