Daily Grommet is hanging out with the SmartGirls

The SmartGirls Way supports women entrepreneurs — and with all the innovative women-owned businesses we see here at Daily Grommet, that’s a mission we can definitely get behind.

In September 2011, they launched the 100×100 Project, featuring a video profile of one female entrepreneur every day for 100 days, sharing their start-up stories and advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs. According to SmartGirls Way founder, Jean Brittingham, “the 100 women in this project are just the tip of a significant women’s entrepreneurial movement.”

So we were honored when they selected Jules Pieri, our founder, as one of the 100 — and equally happy to see some of our own Grommets represented, like Gina Locklear (Zkano) and Sarah McIlroy (FashionPlaytes).

Here’s what Jules had to say:

Girls, Girls, Girls!

As a girl, I formed many notions about entrepreneurship by devouring every biography in my elementary school.  I loved the stories about how a single person like Abraham Lincoln could influence the world.  The founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low, was notably in the group of innovators and leaders who inspired me with her life story.  Thus I was thrilled to be asked to speak about being an entrepreneur at the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts for their National Convention in Houston.

1300 girls converged from all corners.  They also organized their own Leadership Institute which was broadly assembled around the theme of Innovation and Leadership.

It’s always hard to tell if a presentation or talk is “landing” with high school kids.  They are yawning and chronically sleep-deprived.  They are distracted by their phones.  They don’t nod and smile like adults often do in a talk. But the sharp questions from these girls afterwards revealed that they hadn’t missed much from our panel.

The girls swarmed afterwards for photos with the speakers.

Zubaida Bai of AYZH, Kim Karlsrud of Commonstudio and GreenAid, a Girl Scout, me

They kept pressing little trinkets into my hand.  I didn’t understand the gifts until they explained their heart-warming tradition of giving each other things to collect and display.   They are called SWAPS:  Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere.

The giant George. R. Brown Convention center was packed with events and inspiring photos of Girl Scouts and their history.

The hundreds of adults on hand were equally engaged, and many dressed in coordinated outfits that helped their regional groups stand out.  This Florida woman explained the little hats her group sported.  They were meant to be a specific reference to the fashions of the times 100 years ago, with symbolic details of daisies (the founder’s nickname), her pearls, and also the navy color to represent the new Girl Scout uniform being released for the next 100 years.

I participate in a lot of tech conferences and competitions.  I typically only see one woman startup founder for every ten men who choose to compete or speak.  I told the girls that they need to change that.  Girls and women have to stop waiting to feel “ready” to create companies.  I can tell you that these girls are ready.  They are perfect.

New discoveries and old pals at the NYIGF

Every year when the New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF) rolls around, everyone here at Daily Grommet gets a little bit excited (okay, a lot excited!).  We love to see all the great booths at NYIGF, catch up with old friends and of course make some new ones — along with all our new discoveries (check out Jen’s finds from last year).  The crowd this year was terrific.  Everyone had so much energy and enthusiasm, and were happy to tell us about all the great products they were finding, too!

Here are a few pictures I took with my phone while I was walking the show floors.

NYIGF

Hard to tell but it was both sunny and raining at the same time! This made for the perfect day to stay indoors and scout for new possible Grommets.

knobstoppers at NYIGF

Our pals at knobstoppers – their booth was packed! We learned that they have some new products in the works (we can’t wait to see what they’ve been up to).

Cool booth at NYIGF

Design Legacy — amazing stuff!

Light up peace sign! Tori and I agreed that our tweens would go mad for this!

MyDrap at NYIGF

Remember Grommet find MyDrap? They were there too and their booth looked great!

Another Grommet provided some interesting feedback.  We always wonder at the shows how much walking we actually do, and this trip, my Fitbit had the answer. More than 20 miles were logged in the two days I walked the show!

In addition, the team was asked to judge the Blogger’s Choice Awards for the third time, and we’ll have more to report on that topic very soon (here’s a quick look at this year’s winners).

Did you attend the NYIGF? We’d love to hear about what cool stuff you discovered!

Stepping in front of the camera

Last week was a first for me — I was invited to be a guest on Pixability’s webinar series featuring video & social media business professionals talking about their craft. The series is hosted by Bettina Hien, Pixability’s Founder & CEO. Pixability itself is a fascinating company — they help people create cost effective videos for distribution online. Most of the time they send Flip style cameras to their customers, along with a shot list & shooting recommendations.  They also have a network of producers who will show up at your doorstep prepared to make a video. There are obvious parallels to what we do here at Daily Grommet, so it felt like a spirited conversation. But I’m still not used to being in front of a camera!

I’m also awed by Bettina for working on (in her words) “two start ups at once.” The second start up is her infant child, quietly (while I was there)  absorbing all the energy and vitality that is in the DNA of a thriving enterprise.

I really enjoyed meeting the entire extended team at Pixability. We share an appreciation for authentic videos produced from the heart.  The Q & A and “video makeovers” were also uplifting — it made me remember just how daunting video can be when you’re starting out, and how much fun it can be to explore the medium once you get started. It was also the most trafic I’d ever gotten on Twitter, and Tori did a fabulous job of keeping up with it during the show. Which reminds me, I have some @’s in my future…

(Also, I sat down for a  few more questions after the webinar — you can catch them here)

Update: Naya Health

Back in December, we featured the trailblazing work of a young non-profit organization called Nyaya Health that is focused on a remote part of northwestern Nepal where there was not even one physician just a few years ago. Achham is one of the poorest areas in South Asia with some of the world’s highest mortality rates, particularly among women and children. Today Nyaya’s all-Nepali staff provides free healthcare to the community through its hospital and mobile health services. The organization’s open source approach  with complete transparency of expenditures, operations protocols, and clinical outcomes is one of the things that we really love about Nyaya.

In honor of World Health Day  today, we thought we would check in with Nyaya for an update on their work.

Naya Health

Patients wait outside of Bayalpata’s outpatient department to be seen. On an average day Bayalpata Hospital sees between 100 and 150 outpatients

Since we last caught up with them, the team at Nyaya has published its 2010 Annual Report. With a population of 250,000 to serve, the staff of Bayalpata Hospital are always busy. They recently had a challenging case in which a patient had been bitten by a bear. And, because children will be children, they have had to pull a few foreign objects out of ears.

Thanks to hard work and donations,  like the ones made by members of the Daily Grommet community, Nyaya has made progress on two very important projects over the past three months: x-ray technology  at Bayalpata Hospital and further development of the Safe Motherhood Project  in collaboration with the Nepali Ministry of Health and Population.

Members of Nyaya have published a report  in which they explain why diagnostic ultrasound and x-ray are ideal tools for effective healthcare delivery in resource-limited areas. Nyaya wants to work together with others to generate sufficient demand for the types of machines that would meet the needs of rural healthcare settings. For now, Bayalpata Hospital is home to one of only three x-ray machines in western Nepal which serve a combined population of over one million people.

In a place where women used to give birth at home without access to emergency care, more and more women in Achham are giving birth in the hospital which should lead to a marked decrease in maternal and child morbidity and mortality rates. Nyaya is firmly committed to education and outreach that improve health outcomes for women and children, and the organization continues to develop its cadre of community health workers who travel to surrounding villages.

Nyaya Health will be making significant investments in 2011 by building the first surgical theater in the region and powering Bayalpata Hospital with solar energy.

Thank you to all of the members of the Daily Grommet community who are supporting the work of Nyaya Health. Your donations are making a difference, and you can continue to follow Nyaya’s updates on the organization’s blog. At the moment, thanks to a matching donor foundation, all donations to Nyaya are being doubled.

Supporting Future Entrepreneurs

The Daily Grommet runs deep with Simmons graduates – Joanne, Wendy and Julia are all Simmons alums.  The relationship is even stronger now with the addition of our latest intern, Anuja KC.  Anuja was awarded a scholarship from the Deborah L. Natansohn Foundation, which promotes the advancement of women through mentoring programs and educational partnerships and community outreach programs.   We are thrilled that Anuja resonated with Citizen Commerce and humbled that she chose to work with us for her internship. Here’s Anuja on why she chose to work with Daily Grommet for her internship.

My interest in “entrepreneurship” started when I first learned about it in high school. When I read business journals and magazines, more than success stories of business tycoons and trailblazers it was the moving stories behind entrepreneurs and their startups that captivated my attention. On my quest to learn more about entrepreneurship and the nuts and bolts of starting a new venture I landed myself with an internship opportunity at Daily Grommet.

It was through my entrepreneurship professor Dr. Susan Duffy that I learned about this opportunity. The first time I browsed Daily Grommet’s web portal, I did not have to hunt for what the company was all about, the interactive videos and welcoming web presence said it all. Hence, I instantly wrote to Professor Duffy expressing my interest in this enticing opportunity and there was no looking back. Having spent a month interning at Daily Grommet, I must say this is one of those decisions I made as an impulsive college student, which I will never regret.

Being an avid online shopper, I could easily relate to Daily Grommet’s unique stance on “Citizen Commerce”. The idea of finding great products and services and sharing its reviews has always appealed to me. Where else could I find a better place to unleash my passion than Daily Grommet?  I have always believed that a company is as good as its people, and the welcoming ambiance on my first day at work said it all. Within my first week, apart from turning on my quant jock side to do some number crunching, I had already made my impromptu appearance in Celeste Stein tights video, joined a conference call with the suppliers and agreed to test a new product. The hard working and synergistic atmosphere is very contagious and obviously testing the potential grommets in between works makes any drab day an interesting one.

Given its early stage in ecommerce business, the challenges are insurmountable and every day is full of surprises. But the ambiguity and uncertainty does not daunt the Daily Grommet team.  The pressure to launch a new grommet everyday makes each day productive and the collaborative work culture makes every problem seem minuscule.

The responsibility that I have been given as an intern at Daily Grommet is invaluable for me as I hope to capitalize on every aspect I learn here in the days to come. The prospect of learning new something everyday, being focused on the work yet enjoying the process is what excites me and I am glad I chose to intern at Daily Grommet over the companies that consider interns as a side aid than an asset to the company. I hope my time at Daily Grommet for the rest of the semester has even more valuable experiences in store for me.

In case you want to check it out, here is Anuja’s impromptu appearance in one of our daily videos.

Citizen Commerce, Let the Revolution Begin

citizen commerce

On an otherwise unremarkable January morning, the US Government recently made my day. Specifically, a public servant named David J. Kappos.  He’s Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His organization surprised me with the unexpected delivery of a very official-looking Trademark certificate for:

Citizen Commerce

We had applied for this a year ago, but hadn’t heard any updates in months.  The trademark just showed up.  Shiny gold seal and all.

I’m delighted for Daily Grommet to be the cheerleader and guiding hand for Citizen Commerce.  It’s a movement that represents the following thoughts:

  • Individual people have great power to shape the world we live in, through the most ordinary of behaviors: sharing, writing, talking, buying.
  • We control 65% of the US economy via these actions.
  • Every decision to buy (or not buy) a product or service is a “vote” for something.  A vote for a company and people who do business in a way that supports your values
  • Because the tools to create products are so much more accessible than ever, there is a new Industrial Revolution happening all around us.   Big companies with scale no longer control the tools of production and distribution.
  • With social media sharing tools, technologies, and behaviors (and the engagement of highly accessible video) we can finally have the information to act on our values.
  • We can efficiently organize to support (or expose) companies, people, and products that deserve our time, attention, money and resources

THOSE are the reasons I’m grinning ear to ear holding the Trademark certificate.  Let the Revolution begin.
