Back on the Career Track

Return to Work - Carol Fishman CohenCarol Fishman Cohen is one of our favorite friends here at Daily Grommet.  We laughed out loud at her post “My So-Called Daily Grommet Life” on Yahoo Shine!   Carol is one busy lady these days.  Like many of us, she left the workforce to raise her kids (4) and after years working part time (5), and years as a stay-at-home mom (6), she successfully made a career re-entry at an investment firm in Boston.  Carol tells us it took some careful planning, strategizing and a bit of creativity to get “back on the career track” and return to work. She and her co-author and fellow-relauncher Vivian Steir Rabin decided to write the book on it.

Their book Back on the Career Track, A Guide for Stay-at-Home Moms Who Want to Return to Work is an easy read with lots of well-detailed and practical advice from career counselors and job recruiters along with some really inspiring and candid stories from other successful re-launchers.  I liked its format… it makes you first delve inwardly to realistically assess your skills, needs and options.  It then outlines steps to help you develop a plan to build up your confidence and your marketability, to network and get those interviews and, ultimately to land that job.  With the success of the book, Carol and Vivian have co-founded iRelaunch, a company that produces career reentry programs for employers, schools, groups and individuals who want to relaunch their careers. This year they are holding return to work conferences in Atlanta, Boston, NYC, and Washington, D.C.  Check out their site http://www.irelaunch.com/ for details.  With these tough economic times, Carol’s book and her iRelaunch company are fantastic resources for those relaunchers who want to get back on the career track.

Boston is abuzz about the #MegaTweetUp

Can’t wait for tomorrow night — Dec. 16th — and the 2nd annual #MegaTweetUp (especially since I seem to be the only one in town who missed the 1st one, last year). The event celebrates a year’s worth of TweetUps and networking events throughout New England and is hosted by @JoselinMane founder of @Bostontweetup at the Microsoft New England Research & Development (NERD) Center (6pm).

Love the description:  “Red Carpet, meets Music Awards, paired with unprecedented Networking, all at a TweetUp!” What’s a girl to wear??

If you’re local, you can check out the details and register here.

I hear we’ll be attempting to set a bunch of tweetup-related world records (they actually set one last year) — my Guinness-book obsessed son will be so impressed.

Daily Grommet will also be raffling off a few prizes before the event (a little teaser for you all!) and one really cool prizes at this event.

From now until the event, you can enter to win one of three $10 Daily Grommet Gift Certificates leading up to the event.

TO ENTER:

Just follow and tweet @DailyGrommet introducing yourself — don’t forget to include hashtag #MegaTweetup in order for your tweet to be included as an entry.

At the #MegaTweetUp Thursday night, we will be raffling off one Alite Monarch Chair — one of our funkiest and most popular Grommets (it folds up like a burrito, so the winner will be able to trek it around anywhere they go). Plus we hear there are many more great prizes being raffled off — so be sure to get your tickets!

We’ll tweet the Gift Certificates  winners at the start of the event, so be sure to follow us and enter before then.

See you all tomorrow night!

Everyday fashion no-no’s (and their fixes) from the costume designer of Mad Men

Mad Men FashionI don’t generally think of myself of an addict, but the fact is, when it comes to (certain) television shows, I’m a downright junkie. I’m like a character from LOST, pushing the darn button, week after week. I do go through phases — but once I’m hooked, I’ve just gotta know: what happened this week?? And I’m not even a snob about it. I’m just as likely to fall for Modern Family (free) as I am for Entourage (cable – ouch!).

One of my longest running crushes: Mad Men … Madison Ave in its heyday. Beautiful, wicked, tragic people wearing stunning clothes. Iconic 60′s fashion in a haze of booze and cigarette smoke. What’s not to love about Mad Men fashion? So when Anna at Hachette told me about The Fashion File: Advice, Tips, and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men (Emmy award winner, Janie Bryant), I just had to have it — so we could share it with you, of course.

Mad Men BookFashionistas will love the forward from January Jones and the stylish illustrations. You’ll get a peek backstage, but pick up some pretty practical tips too. Here’s a bit about “Comfort versus Chic” — a topic I can especially relate to (mostly because I’m a transgressor in just about every category!)

Have fun discovering your inner Betty or Joan …

Comfort versus Chic

Just as the right accessories can enliven any outfit, the right pieces will surely main a stylish silhouette. I refer to those items as “fashion felons” and can guarantee that they never play nice with other separates. Sneakers, for instance, are appropriate only for athletics. And don’t think that you can get away with them while running errands. You can find a smart, chic alternative that’s equally easy on the feet. Skeptical? Read on.

Fashion felon: A shapeless tee

The white T-shirt, first issued by the navy was originally designed as an undershirt beneath a uniform. But ever since the fifties, it has become an American staple and tripled in size (I’m not talking about the huge, trendy tees with shoulder pads form the eighties either.) If you’re swimming in a T-shift, your silhouette suddenly appears as vast as the ocean. Toss this top or relegate it to attire for garden work or attic cleaning.

Stylish substitute:

You don’t need to banish tees. Just be sure to find a style that doesn’t swallow you whole, and opt for little feminine accents like a puffed sleeve or a low ballet back. Ruching on the sides will slim your outline and three-quarter sleeves are always flattering. Experiment with varied necklines like a V, cowl, or boatneck style. A cotton tunic is just as breathable as a tee. Plus you get a wink at your natural curves and femininity.

Fashion felon: Visible panty lines

These pesky undergarment outlines disrupt the flow of a tailored silhouette. Plus they hardly flatter the backside. Similarly, a protruding panty strap looks more unkempt than alluring.

Stylish substitute:

The thong — originally worn by men more than 50,000 years ago as a loincloth — is one handy solution for eradicating panty lines. If you’re averse to the style, girdle-inspired shapewear will certainly do the trick.

Fashion felon: Visible protruding midriffs, AKA muffin-tops, and bra back bulges

Again these disruptions to your contours break up that natural long line of the body.

Stylish substitute:

If you’re not blessed with a slim torso, replace low-rise jeans with a high-waisted style that doesn’t pinch at the midriff. A well-fitted bra should eradicate back bulges …

Fashion felon: Disheveled sneakers

Perhaps the perceptually chic Parisians abhor jogging because it would force them to wear running shoes? A pair of slipshod sneakers, with scuff marks or grass stains, should be worn only for athletic reasons or to a sporting event. In my opinion, they defy femininity.

Stylish substitute:

Flat-heeled boots, ballet flats, summer sandals, and espadrilles all make perfect alternatives. Or try a pair of slip-on canvas skimmers in a vivid red, green, or floral print, which look cute with jeans, shorts, or even a summer mini dress.

Join us at Wellesley Marketplace

Barbara Gordon

Barbara Gordon

Hi, everyone!  Barbara here, and I want to share a great tip for folks in the Boston area.  While Daily Grommet spoils us by bringing unique gift ideas into our homes each day, sometimes, it’s pretty darn awesome just to get out and be among product creators and artisans.  I know Jules loves this, too, as she keeps us up to date on her own travels through her “Real Deal Road Trip” series.  Last year, she visited Wellesley Marketplace, which is an event near and dear to me because I’m part of the organization that presents the event as a community fundraiser each year.  I think events like this are the perfect complement to what Daily Grommet does so well — we celebrate innovation and product creators, and provide a “big tent” for artisans who may not have the scale to become a Grommet (at least not yet….we actually have one exhibitor who plans to use her proceeds from Marketplace to launch her website!).   Well this year –  we invite you to come out to to join us.  We’ll have over 130 artisans under the roof of the Wellesley Middle School on November 20, where shoppers will find a fresh mix of exhibitors showcasing the latest trends in jewelry, home, personal, and children’s accessories.

We’re providing Grommet fans in the Boston area (well, hey, or really anyone who wants to come to Wellesley on November 20!) with a chance to win 4 “Premium” shopping tickets, which gives you first crack at the event by allowing you in at 9 a.m. versus 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 20.  It’s the best way to beat the crowds, which do begin to build by mid-morning.

Wellesley Marketplace will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 20, at the Wellesley Middle School.  Admission is $10 for Adults, and $5 for Students and Seniors.  Tickets will be available at the door.  Premium shopping tickets are also available at Wellesley Roche Bros. and at the door for $15, allowing early bird shoppers to get the first crack at Marketplace for an exclusive shopping hour from 9 -10 a.m.
We’d love to see you!  Do you plan to join us at Wellesley Marketplace? You can also connect with Wellesley on Facebook and see who else is planning on coming.

General contest rules: To enter, you must be a U. S. or Canadian resident, and at least 18 years of age and you must leave a comment or question on today’s post. No purchase necessary.  2 winners will be randomly selected and will receive 2 tickets each. Employees, contractors, and the families of employees and contractors of Daily Grommet, Inc. are not eligible to enter. You are not eligible to win if you have received a prize or giveaway from Daily Grommet in the last six months. Void where prohibited. What’s your fashion must-have?

unique women's clothing and accessories

Here's Julia testing the Naturally Knotty shawl.

Here at Daily Grommet, we have been known to “get our fashion on” from time to time. We’re always looking for unique women’s clothing and accessories to feature. Just two weeks ago we featured fashionable fall caps for women and a must-have bamboo cashmere shawl (both of which we happily tested).

So, in the spirit of all things fashion, we thought it would be fun to ask some of our favorite fashion folks on Twitter what their must-have fashion item is right now. Check out what fashion items and accessories are making their lists.

Yuri from @lookbookdotnu: Our must-have fall item is the perfect faux fur jacket.

(warm and stylish jackets, yes – a must!)

……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Deana from  @greenwithglamour: Without a doubt, my Fall Must Have is The Clutch in Leopard. I’ve already used mine tons (with everything from a tee & jeans to a fancy dress & mile high heels).

(love it when accessories and bags can do double duty!)

……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Kelly @bagsnob: My must have item this fall is Tod’s D-Bag in laminated distressed gray leather.

(gray, I am currently loving this color myself)

……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Tori from @torianddean: Black booties. I wear them with dresses, skirts, leggings, and skinny jeans. Goes with everything.

(every girl should have that go-to item in their closet!)

……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Francine  from @designersocial: Our must have fashion item is an Angel Jackson handbag like the one we custom ordered for Blake Lively. With twisted leather handle, and a longer leather strap it can be worn in a number of ways: in the hand, over the shoulder or across the body.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

So, what’s YOUR fashion must-have item? Leave a comment and share  and we will choose one person at random to recieve our must-have fashionable fall caps for women from Pistill! Good luck!

From New York’s Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant to You

Just last week, I spent a few days in New York City and was reminded what an important role food plays there. I had lunch in a charming French bistro with Maria Baugh, co-founder of famed cupcake bakery, Butter Lane and Managing Editor of Food Network Magazine; I toured a to-die-for Italian food mecca (more on this to follow!), and the Hachette Book Group told me about the newly published Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook, by the husband and wife team and restaurant founders, Neil Kleinberg and DeDe Lanman. After reading the recipes, I’m determined to make my way back to the Big Apple just to have brunch at “New York’s number one breakfast spot” (says Lonely Planet … and I’m buying it!).

Yesterday, we asked our Facebook community which of the two wildly popular Clinton Street cookies recipes they’d like us to share here on the blog: Chocolate Chunk … or Maple Walnut? So, without further ado, here’s your winner (by a crumb!). Happy baking:

Clinton St. Baking Company: Maple Walnut Cookies

Makes 24 cookies

1 stick (8 Tbs.) unsalted butter, room temperature

1/2 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling

1/4 cup maple syrup

1 large egg yolk

3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 3/4 all-purpose flour

1 cup walnuts (or pecans), toasted

*These cookies are made from dough that you can roll, slice, and bake like a shortbread. Not too sweet, they’re great confections for dunking in coffee

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together the butter and sugar for 3 to 4 minutes, until combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the maple syrup, yolk, and vanilla and mix until smooth and combined, again scraping down the sides of the bowl.

3. Add the flour and turn the speed to low. Mix until combined and a dough forms. Add the nuts and briefly mix until they are evenly dispersed in the dough.

4. Roll the dough into a log (2 inches thick and 12 inches long) and wrap it in plastic. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes, until firm.

5. Coat 2 cookie sheets with nonstick cooking spray or line them with parchment paper (we do both at the bakery to prevent sticking).

6. Remove the dough from the fridge, unwrap, and use a knife to make 1/2-inch thick slices. Then sprinkle lightly with sugar.

7. Place 12 cookies on each cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, or until pale golden brown. The cookies should have a brown colored ring around the exterior and the undersides will be a golden brown.

How would you like to have over 100 of their beloved recipes (yes, including more cookie recipes) that can be found the Clinton St. Baking Company cookbook? We are giving away one copy to one of you! To enter, leave a comment on this post and we will select one winner.

General contest rules: To enter, you must be a U. S. or Canadian resident, and at least 18 years of age and you must leave a comment or question on today’s post. No purchase necessary. Let’s get cooking for fall!

Tori Tait
Tori Tait

I love to cook. I might not be a Teresa Scenna, but I love strapping on an apron and spending an afternoon trying new recipes and making a mess of my kitchen. So, when I had the chance to review two new cookbooks I immediately got out the pots and pans.

The first book I cracked open was American Cookery by James Beard. Not only was I excited to read the food diary of  this master, but I was really eager to read the forward from chef  Tom Colicchio (I am a huge Top Chef fan on which Colicchio is a judge). The book (and forward) did not disappoint. Here’s a bit more about the book:

“James Beard was the “dean of American cookery” (New York Times), and he put practically everything he learned about cooking into this single magnificent–now classic–cookbook. James Beard’s American Cookery  includes more than fifteen hundred of his favorite and most successful recipes, as well as advice on dozens of cooking questions, from choosing meats and vegetables to preserving fruit and making real cheeseburgers. A celebration of the roots of cooking in the American style, this repackaged edition features the original text and color illustrations, and a new foreword by Tom Colicchio. Like Mastering the Art of French Cooking and The Joy of Cooking, it is a standard reference no kitchen is complete without.”

Claire Robinson
Claire Robinson

The second cookbook I reviewed was 5 Ingredient Fix by Food Network Chef, Claire Robinson. I was immediately captivated by the gorgeous images and the elegant simplicity of her recipes — 5 ingredients, that’s it! Recipes like Ginger Pumpkin Tart, Maple Whipped Sweet Potatoes with Caramelized Onions, and Fig and Rosemary Flatbread are all on my menu this fall. More about the book:

5 Ingredient Fix“Claire Robinson, the hot new Food Network star of 5 Ingredient Fix and Food Network Challenge, helps people get dinner on the table with little fuss and a few great ingredients. The quest for simple, affordable, and fresh, mouthwatering food is over. 5 Ingredient Fix helps put delicious and sophisticated meals on the table in a snap. With people struggling to simplify, streamline, and budget, the Food Network’s Claire Robinson is here to help. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated to be impressive; simplifying the process with fewer ingredients saves time, frustration, and ultimately, money.”
Whether you are a seasoned pro, or a wanna-be chef (like myself), these cookbooks are great to have in your culinary library. Want to get cooking? Leave a comment and let me know which cookbook you’d prefer and I’ll send one of you American Cookery and the other 5 Ingredient Fix!

Re-thinking personal safety

Julia

Today’s Grommet, ila security, actually got me thinking quite a bit about my own personal safety. I know there are times when I’m not as aware of my surroundings and as alert as I should be … and I’ll bet I’m not the only one feeling that way after watching today’s video. Jacqui Hames is the spokesperson for Ila security and she reached out and asked us to pass along her top 10 safety tips for personal safety. I was very impressed by Jacqui — she’s one of Britain’s best-known real-life detectives, with 25 years in the London Metropolitan Police. Plus, she co-hosted BBCs Crimewatch for 16 years. She clearly knows what she’s talking about, so I’m happy to share her safety primer with everyone here.

by Jacqui Hames

1. THINK AHEAD

Take a few minutes before you go out to think through and plan your journey, particularly if it’s not a regular route.

It may sound obvious but try and avoid poorly lit or very quiet areas if possible – even if it is the quickest route.

Check public transport journey times and look for alternative options should your plans change or a bus/train is cancelled – have a contingency.

2. CARRY A MOBILE PHONE

This can be a lifeline when stranded but when you need it most you can guarantee you’ll have forgotten to top up your credit or the battery will be flat! If nothing else, make sure you have change for a call box. Some phones have an SOS message facility – check yours.

3. LET SOMEONE KNOW

Keep in touch with a member of your family or a friend, particularly of you’re feeling nervous or a little vulnerable on a new route. Phone or text just before you start your journey and let them know what time you should be arriving.

4. CARRY PERSONAL SECURITY ALARM

This could give you the opportunity to stop any attacker in his tracks. Attaching the ila Dusk to the outside of your bag also provides you with the additional feature of using a woman’s scream.

So many of us are literally ‘struck dumb’ with fear when confronted by an attacker – the ila Dusk gives you back a voice and valuable seconds to escape. Sad to say these days there aren’t many knights in shining armour about to come to your rescue unless you’re really lucky, but using the few seconds to put as much distance between you, could stop you from becoming a victim.

5. WALK WITH CONFIDENCE

Following all these tips will give you confidence and there’s no doubt that striding out, head up, oozing confidence is one of the best ways of putting off a potential attacker. He won’t want to raise his risk of being caught, so if he thinks you’re going to cause him trouble he’s likely to be put off. When you arrive at your front door have your key ready to go straight in. Try to wear flat shoes (or have spares with you) and walk with traffic coming towards you so a car can’t creep up and surprise you from behind.

6. DON’T FLASH YOUR CASH OR VALUABLES

If you stop at a cash machine or shop on the way, try to conduct transactions as discretely as possible. Carrying your bag with the clasp facing inwards is a good idea, but keep your keys and phone separately in your pocket if possible.

7. TAKE OFF THOSE HEADPHONES

It’s sooo tempting to lose yourself in your favourite music when walking home or to work, but being aware of your surroundings and the other people around you will sharpen your senses and provide an early warning system of any potential trouble.

8. ALWAYS USE LICENSED CABS

When your feet are sore, you’re tired, fed up and desperate to get home it’s oh so tempting to get into a car when the driver says ‘Want a cab, love?’ Please don’t – licensed cab drivers are only allowed to ply for hire in a regulated cab rank. Would you willingly get into a stranger’s car under normal circumstances? Well that’s exactly what this is.

Book a cab through a known cab company and make sure the driver tells you the name it was booked in – before you get in. Programme a couple of reputable cab numbers into your phone before you go out.

9. IF YOU THINK YOU’RE BEING FOLLOWED

I know – our worst nightmare. But it needn’t be if you keep your wits about you and act fast. First try crossing a road or turning back on yourself. If they continue to follow, assume your suspicions are right and get help. Try pretty much anywhere there are people – pub, bar, cafe, shop, service station etc or knock on the nearest door where the lights are on. If the worst happens and you think an attack is imminent set off your ila Dusk alarm and run as fast as your can towards an area where you know there will be people. Leave your shoes behind and even your handbag if that’s what he’s after – you are far more valuable than property.

10. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

Well all develop instincts or intuition for danger as we gain more experience of life. But it’s easy, particularly under influence of alcohol or peer pressure to ignore what they’re telling you. Trust them and you’ll invariably stay one step ahead of the criminal.

The Search for Clean Cosmetics

Beauty products are supposed to do great things for our skin, but the scary truth is that many of them expose us to harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through our skin.

A new tell-all book by journalists Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt blows the lid off unhealthy cosmetics. But it’s not just gloom and doom. No More Dirty Looks: The Truth About Your Beauty Products and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics shares insider secrets from scientists and dermatologists, plus it lists Siobhan and Alexandra’s choices for the best clean cosmetics, hair care, and skin care products (one of them is an upcoming Grommet, so stay tuned).

No More Dirty Looks is a great resource. Siobhan and Alexandra are informative without being preachy. We had a chance to ask them a few questions of our own, and here’s what they had to say:

This can be overwhelming for people — and upsetting, as well. You want to feel like the products you buy are safe, when the majority are not. What should people start with, to see the biggest difference? Body lotion?

Don’t we know it! We found it very upsetting to learn that the products we trusted were potentially unsafe, but that’s also why we wrote an essentially upbeat book. We LOVE our products now, and we want to make the transition easy, beautifying and fun for other women. We think the book helps with the transition, because it’s arranged by body part/product category. We say start slow, replace things as you run out of them, and keep in mind that things you use daily, and over a large surface area — such as a shampoo, facial sunscreen, and body lotion – should be among the first to go.

What do you say to people who try one of the products that you recommend and they don’t see a difference in their skin care?

We’ve had pretty happy responses so far, we have to say! But as with anything, we think you need to find what works for you. I love pure organic argan oil from Kahina, and believe it has completely changed my skin. Some people don’t want to put oils on their faces, but really love fancy creams from Tata Harper, or Evan Healy. The trick, as with anything, is managing expectations. We can’t expect a bottle of anything to make us look 10 years younger, but we can expect more manageable, balanced, calm and hydrated skin, and that can make a huge difference in our appearance and in how we feel!

We’re curious: Why are some of the top brands not included, like Perricone, La Mer & Arbonne?

We were very strict when it came to ingredients and we only recommended products with really clean lists. We don’t name names in the book, because the truth is most mainstream lines all use the same ingredients—variations on a theme.  We think you can get more bang for your buck using organic, clean lines instead.

You can also visit their website nomoredirtylooks.com.

If you would like to win a copy of No More Dirty Looks, simply leave a comment on this post. We will randomly select two winners.

General contest rules: To enter, you must be a U. S. or Canadian resident, and at least 18 years of age and you must leave a comment or question on today’s post. No purchase necessary. The winner(s) will be randomly selected and will receive the title above. Employees, contractors, and the families of employees and contractors of Daily Grommet, Inc. are not eligible to enter. An interview with author Shauna Glenn

Shauna Glenn is a hilarious writer, and her second book (Relative Insanity) has just come out. I asked Shauna if she’s do a Q&A for our readers here at  Daily Grommet and she was kind enough to sit down with us and dish.

I’d love to give you the chance to tell our readers where they can find you online. *I* know you’re funny on a daily basis – it’s only fair that we let everyone else in on the fun.

You can find me on my website, ShaunaGlenn.com

Or at AimingLow.com. And of course TheBadMomsClub.com

On Twitter I’m @shaunaglenn; and I’m on Facebook too (but only because my publicist is making me–please don’t invite me to play Farmville)

Can you give our readers a quick synopsis of what Relative Insanity is about?

My latest book, Relative Insanity, is about a woman, Kate, who gives up her career to stay at home and raise her children. She definitely thought her life would amount to something other than being the resident nose wiper. Along the way she loses her identity and instead becomes some one’s wife and mother. She’s lost. She’s unhappy. But she has no way of knowing what it is she wants or needs. Her family doesn’t help. Her mother is not exactly the kind of traditional grandmother she was hoping she would be. Her mother in law is a religious fanatic who insists that Kate will one day become a minister. Usually when hearing this Kate chokes on her wine. Her husband, Tom, is a certified workaholic who seems less and less interested in her, leaving her feeling lonely and unwanted. In other words, Kate’s a mess. But don’t let this depressing synopsis fool you. This book is funny.

Here’s what a few people are saying about Relative Insanity…

“From the title, I thought this was a book to help me deal with my brother’s bi-polar disorder, because he’s spiraling down very quickly and I needed immediate assistance. He’s dead now, but man, this book was funny!” –Adam Heath Avitable, author of Avitable.com

“This book is good birth control. It will also make you laugh like hell. You should buy it because it’s hard to find that kind of combination without a medical prescription.” –Jenny Lawson, TheBloggess.com

“Shauna Glenn is from that rare breed of authors who can make you laugh until you cry even when she’s writing about the most raw and visceral human emotions. Driven by heart and hilarity, RELATIVE INSANITY might just be Shauna’s best novel yet.” –Danny Evans, author of RAGE AGAINST THE MESHUGENAH

Writers often talk about their “muse.” What does your muse look/feel like?

I would say that my family feeds my overactive imagination and the stories just blossom from there. As you can probably guess, they’re excited about this.

What did you find to be the hardest part of the writing process for the book?

The hardest part of the book writing process is finding the time and ignoring the distractions. I have to force myself to shut off things like THE INTERNET. Which, if you know me at all, is hard.

What did you find to be the best part of the writing process for the book?

The best part of the book writing process for me is typing two little words. The End.

This is your second novel (Congratulations!) – do you have plans to keep writing books? Is there a book #3 on the horizon?

I have more books in the works. I have one other completed manuscript called Good Mourning, but it’s in the editing phase. I hope to finish it by 2015. I know that’s a long way out there but there’s nothing worse than having to rewrite sections of a book you swore you were finished writing. I would rather eat my own arm than edit a manuscript. But like everything else the Nazis invented, editing is an important, yet sucky, part of the writing process.

Also, I’m in the process of writing a non-fiction proposal. So we’ll see what happens there. I’m sure my family can’t wait to read that.

Thanks so much Shauna!
